Grape Vines
One of humanity's oldest cultivated fruits — and one of the most rewarding for the patient home grower. Three distinct species types, each with its own pruning system and climate requirements. Matching the right variety to your site is everything.

Why grow grapes?
Grapes (Vitis species) have been cultivated by humans for thousands of years and remain among the most versatile and long-lived fruiting plants a home grower can establish. A well-sited, properly pruned vine can remain productive for 50 years or more, providing fruit for fresh eating, juice, jams, and — where climate permits — winemaking. In the home garden, grapes also serve as exceptional ornamental vines, providing dramatic seasonal interest from spring leaf-out through the deep fall color of the foliage before dormancy.
The key to success is making two good decisions before planting: choosing the right species type for your climate, and understanding which pruning system that species requires. These decisions are not interchangeable. American species and hybrids require cane pruning; most European wine grapes require spur pruning. Getting this wrong limits yields for the entire life of the vine.
Grapes are also one of the few crops where soil fertility can work against you. Unlike most fruiting plants, grapes perform better in moderately lean, deep, well-drained soil than in rich, heavily amended soil. Fertile soil produces excessive vine growth at the expense of fruit production.
Choosing varieties
The three types
All grapes fall into one of three broad categories based on species origin. Understanding these categories shapes every decision that follows — from site selection to pruning system to disease management.
European — Vitis vinifera
The wine and table grape of commerce — Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Flame Seedless. Best flavor quality; crisp, non-slip flesh; thin skin. Zones 6–9 for most; bud damage typically at 0 to −10°F; vine death at −15°F or below. Highly susceptible to powdery mildew. Spur pruning required for most wine varieties. Best suited to warm, dry-summer climates (eastern WA, eastern OR, CA).
American — Vitis labrusca
Native to northeastern North America. Concord, Niagara, Catawba, Canadice. Slip-skin berries (flesh separates from skin); distinctive "foxy" grape-jelly aroma. Cold-hardy to approximately −10 to −20°F. Good disease resistance. Requires cane pruning — basal buds are typically non-fruiting. Excellent for juice, jelly, and fresh eating. Wider climate adaptability than vinifera.
French Hybrids
Crosses between American and European species — Marquette, Frontenac, Marechal Foch, Traminette, Vignoles. Combine improved cold hardiness (some to Zone 3–4) and disease resistance with wine-quality flavor. Right choice for cold-climate wine production. Most require cane pruning. Recommended by OSU Extension for colder climates in OR and the upper Midwest.
Table grapes vs. wine grapes
Within these species categories, varieties are further divided by purpose. Table grapes are bred for fresh eating — sweeter, often seedless, with thinner, more tender skins. Wine grapes are higher in tannins, typically seeded, with thicker skins that contribute to wine structure. A few varieties are considered dual-purpose; some are grown exclusively for juice.
The purpose distinction matters beyond flavor: table grapes and wine grapes typically require different pruning systems. Wine grapes (especially European vinifera) are usually spur-pruned because their basal buds are fruitful. Table grapes (especially American labrusca types) require cane pruning because fruitfulness is concentrated on buds further from the base. Check individual variety descriptions to confirm the recommended pruning system before planting.
Climate and variety selection
Climate is the single most important factor in variety selection. West of the Cascades, only early-ripening vinifera varieties or American/hybrid types are realistic for home growers — the growing season is too short for late-ripening European varieties to develop proper sugar levels. East of the Cascades, the full range of vinifera wine grapes is possible, but winter cold hardiness becomes a real concern. In Zone 5 and colder, cold-hardy hybrids (Marquette, Frontenac, Marechal Foch) are the most reliable wine-quality choice.
West of the Cascades, American-type table grapes — Concord, Canadice, Himrod, Reliance, Interlaken — are the most reliable choice for most home growers. For wine grapes west of the Cascades, only the earliest-ripening vinifera varieties are suitable, and these perform best on south- or southwest-facing slopes that maximize heat accumulation. WSU and the Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation both recommend grafted vines (rather than own-rooted) for earlier ripening in cool-summer maritime climates. Purchase only certified disease-free stock.
Site selection and trellis
Siting your vine
Plant grapes in the warmest, sunniest, best-drained location available. A minimum of 8 hours of direct sun is the baseline — grapes particularly benefit from south- or southwest-facing exposures and from any site feature that accumulates extra heat: a concrete wall, a south-facing slope, or dark mulch on the soil surface. Avoid low-lying frost pockets where cold air pools on still spring nights — late frosts on newly emerged shoots cause severe damage.
Grapes tolerate a wide range of soils but prefer deep, well-drained, moderately lean soil with a pH of 6.3–6.8. Too-rich soil produces excessive vine vigor at the expense of fruit. Avoid heavy clay and sites where water pools after rain. If drainage is poor, build a raised mound before planting.
Trellis — build it before you plant
A permanent, sturdy trellis is a prerequisite — not an afterthought. A grape vine will outlast a poorly built trellis, and retraining an established vine after trellis failure is a significant setback. Set posts deeply in concrete; brace end posts diagonally; use heavy-gauge wire (No. 9 or No. 10 high-tensile). The trellis design determines which training system is practical, so decide on a pruning system before you finalize trellis design.

Cane pruning (American types and most hybrids): basal buds are typically vegetative — cutting to short spurs removes all productive bud zones. Canes of 10–15 buds are retained and tied to the trellis wire each year, then replaced the following season. Spur pruning (most European wine grapes): basal buds are fruitful. Short 2–3 bud spurs are retained along permanent horizontal cordons; two shoots grow from each spur, each bearing a fruit cluster. If uncertain which system your variety needs, default to cane pruning — spur pruning an American-type variety dramatically reduces yields (USU Extension; PSU Extension).
Pruning and training
Annual dormant pruning is the most critical management practice for grapes. Grapes fruit on new shoots growing from one-year-old wood — wood from the current season cannot fruit, and wood older than one year (other than the permanent trunk and cordon) does not fruit reliably. Without annual renewal pruning, vines become overcrowded, shaded, and disease-prone. Grape pruning requires removing 80–90% of the wood produced the previous season — this is correct and necessary, not excessive (OSU Extension; USU Extension).
When to prune
Prune during full dormancy — late winter through early spring, before budbreak. In most climates, late January through March is the window. Pruning too early in fall increases cold injury risk on retained canes. Pruning as buds begin to swell causes sap "bleeding" from cuts — alarming in appearance but of minor importance to vine health (MU Extension). The more important rule: finish pruning before active growth begins.
Cane pruning — American and hybrid types
Each dormant season, select 2–4 vigorous, pencil-thick canes that grew in good light. Prune each to approximately 10–15 buds and tie them to the trellis wire as this season's fruiting canes. Near each fruiting cane, leave a 1–2 bud renewal spur that will produce replacement canes for next year's selection. Remove all other wood. For table grapes, OSU Extension recommends retaining 50–80 buds per mature vine.
Spur pruning — European wine grapes
Retain permanent horizontal cordons trained along the trellis wire. Cut all lateral canes along each cordon back to 2–3 bud spurs spaced every 4–6 inches. Each spur produces 2 shoots, each bearing a fruit cluster. Remove all other wood. For wine grapes, OSU Extension recommends retaining 20–30 buds per vine — far fewer than table grapes — concentrating energy into fewer, higher-quality clusters.
Summer management
Tucking new shoots between catch wires, removing water sprouts from the trunk, and removing 1–2 leaves near the base of each shoot after fruit set all improve air circulation, reduce disease pressure, and enhance fruit color and ripening. Avoid removing excessive foliage — the leaves are producing the carbohydrates that ripen the fruit.
For home growers in western WA and OR, OSU Extension's free publication Growing Table Grapes is the most relevant and practical reference available — it covers variety selection, cane pruning, and management specifically for PNW conditions. Leaf removal around clusters and cluster thinning are especially important in cool-summer maritime climates for improving ripening and reducing Botrytis pressure.
Watering and feeding
Target approximately 1 inch of water per week during the growing season — roughly ¾–1 gallon per square foot over the root zone. Apply deeply once or twice per week rather than lightly each day. Established grapes are reasonably drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture through fruit sizing is important for cluster development. Drip irrigation at the base of the vine keeps foliage dry and significantly reduces powdery mildew pressure compared to overhead watering.
In the PNW, established vines require relatively little supplemental irrigation. East of the Cascades, permanent drip irrigation is essential through the dry summer. For container vines, water until saturated and drainage occurs, then allow the top 1–2 inches to dry before watering again.
Grapes need less fertility than most fruiting plants. Apply a balanced fertilizer or 2 inches of well-rotted compost in late winter through early summer — but use restraint. Excessive nitrogen drives vine growth at the expense of fruit quality and ripening. If vines are producing vigorous growth and foliage is healthy dark green, withhold fertilizer. Never fertilize after early summer.
Unlike most fruit crops, grapes actively perform better in moderately lean, deep soil. Fertile soil and excess nitrogen push vegetative growth — producing long, lush shoots with poor fruit set and delayed ripening. If your soil is very fertile, reduce or eliminate fertilizer applications entirely and allow the vine's moderate hunger to drive fruit production rather than shoot growth.
Harvest
Unlike many fruits, grapes do not continue to ripen or accumulate sugar after they are picked. The sugar at harvest is the sugar in the fruit — there is no ripening on the counter. Taste is the definitive ripeness indicator: sample individual berries from different parts of the cluster over several days as harvest approaches. A ripe grape is sweet, the acidity is balanced and pleasant, and seeds (if present) have turned from green to brown. Color change alone is not reliable — many varieties reach full color weeks before they are actually ripe.
Harvest clusters by cutting the stem cleanly with shears — do not pull clusters, which damages adjacent wood. Refrigerate harvested clusters promptly; fresh table grapes keep well for 1–2 weeks refrigerated. Grapes for juice or winemaking should be processed as quickly as possible after harvest.
Growing in containers
Grapes can be grown in containers with a minimum 20-gallon container at maturity. Increase container size gradually over several years rather than starting in a very large pot. Use a quality potting mix with some added compost — do not use garden soil. A practical container approach: a single central pole with several short spurs at the top, keeping the vine compact and manageable.
Container vines require more frequent watering than in-ground plantings and more vigilant powdery mildew monitoring — reduced airflow around containers increases foliage humidity. In Zone 6 and colder, move pots to a frost-protected but unheated structure in winter; container roots lack the insulation of surrounding soil. Position containers in the sunniest, warmest spot available — a south-facing patio is ideal.
Common problems
The most significant disease of grapes worldwide, caused by Erysiphe necator. Unlike most fungal diseases, powdery mildew does not require rain or free moisture — it thrives in warm, dry conditions with moderate humidity. White to gray powdery growth on leaves, shoots, and young fruit; infected fruit cracks, scars, and becomes susceptible to secondary infections including Botrytis. Once berry scarring occurs it is permanent — all treatments are preventative, not curative (OSU Extension). European vinifera is far more susceptible than American labrusca types.

- Begin preventative sprays at budbreak — do not wait for visible symptoms
- Sulfur, lime sulfur, or Bordeaux mixture on a 7–14 day schedule; do not apply sulfur when temperatures exceed 90°F — it can injure vines
- Potassium bicarbonate or milk spray as supplemental options
- Open canopy management is critical — train and summer prune to maximize air circulation and sun exposure through the vine
- Alternate fungicide classes each application to prevent resistance development
- Choose resistant varieties — American and hybrid types have significantly better natural mildew resistance than vinifera
Gray mold on ripening fruit clusters, caused by Botrytis cinerea. Favored by cool, wet conditions — dew events and pre-harvest rain are the primary triggers. Any wound, skin crack, or powdery mildew infection provides an entry point. Can destroy entire clusters within days in wet weather (PSU Extension). Particularly problematic in maritime climates like western WA and OR.

- Open canopy management is the primary defense — leaf removal around clusters reduces humidity in the fruiting zone
- Remove diseased clusters immediately; never leave them on the vine
- Avoid wetting ripening fruit; drip irrigation at soil level rather than overhead watering
- Do not over-irrigate; wet conditions at cluster level promote infection
- Fungicide applications at bloom and pre-harvest on susceptible varieties in wet climates
Deer browse grape foliage readily and will strip young vines entirely. The lush spring shoot growth is particularly attractive.
- An 8-foot woven wire fence is the most reliable protection
- Hardware cloth or mesh cages protect individual young vines during establishment
- Repellents provide short-term deterrence only; not reliable season-long and require consistent reapplication
Starlings, robins, and other birds target ripening clusters aggressively and can strip a vine quickly once fruit begins to color. The damage window coincides precisely with when the grower most wants to leave fruit on the vine.
- Bird netting draped over the vine is the most reliable protection; secure edges so birds cannot enter from below
- Begin monitoring as clusters approach full color — address the problem before significant loss occurs
- Reflective scare tape provides short-term deterrence; birds adapt quickly
Spider mites and grape leaf rust mites cause stippling and bronzing of foliage, especially in hot, dry weather and when broad-spectrum pesticide use has eliminated natural predator populations.
- Maintain adequate irrigation — water-stressed vines are far more susceptible
- Minimize broad-spectrum pesticide use; natural predatory mites provide significant biological control when not disrupted
- Insecticidal soap with ultra-light oil for active infestations; note that mites can develop resistance to pyrethrin/rotenone
- Dormant oil applied in late winter reduces overwintering mite egg populations
Leaf curl, distorted new growth, and sooty mold from honeydew deposits. Rarely threatens established vines but can weaken young plantings during establishment.
- Natural predators (ladybugs, parasitic wasps) often provide adequate control — encourage with nearby habitat plantings such as dill or yarrow
- Dislodge with a strong water spray
- Pyrethrin, rotenone, or insecticidal soap for heavier infestations; control ants that protect aphid colonies
Bark gnawed from the trunk at ground level under snow or heavy mulch. Girdling kills the vine above the injury — particularly serious on grafted vines if damage occurs below the graft union, allowing the rootstock to take over.
- Keep mulch 4–6 inches away from the trunk at all times — this is especially critical for grafted vines
- Keep grass and vegetation cleared 1–2 feet from the base
- Vinyl tree guards protect the trunk through establishment
- Inspect carefully each spring at snowmelt; check that damage is above the graft union on grafted vines
Puncture-type feeding damage on ripening clusters followed by decay and deformity in surrounding tissue. Brown spots may appear in harvested fruit.

Seasonal care calendar

Prune in the February–March window to reduce cold injury risk on retained canes. Begin powdery mildew prevention at budbreak — cool, moist PNW springs with slow-drying foliage create conditions for early mildew establishment on susceptible varieties.
- Continue powdery mildew spray program on a 7–14 day schedule; alternate fungicide classes each application
- Shoot thinning: remove water sprouts from the trunk; thin to 1–2 shoots per spur on spur-pruned vines for optimal cluster size and airflow
- Do not apply insecticides during bloom — protect pollinators
- In years 1–2: remove all flower clusters as they develop to direct energy into vine establishment
- In year 3+: if more than one cluster forms per shoot, remove the lower cluster before bloom
- Continue mildew monitoring and preventative sprays; do not apply sulfur when temperatures exceed 90°F
- Summer pruning: tuck shoots into catch wires; tip vigorous shoots that extend well beyond the fruiting zone; remove water sprouts from trunk
- Leaf removal: remove 1–2 leaves near the base of each shoot to improve air circulation and light exposure to clusters; do not over-defoliate
- Maintain deep irrigation through fruit sizing; reduce irrigation as harvest approaches to concentrate sugars
- Begin tasting clusters periodically as color develops
- Harvest when clusters taste fully ripe and sweet, seeds have turned brown, and flavor is fully developed — sugar does not increase after picking
- Install bird netting before clusters reach full color if birds are a concern
- Inspect for Botrytis after any rain event near harvest; remove and destroy infected clusters immediately
- After harvest, continue irrigation if fall is dry until vines go fully dormant
- Allow vines to go dormant naturally — do not remove remaining foliage
- Apply fresh mulch over root zone after vines go dormant; keep well back from trunk
- Install trunk guards at base of vines where rodents are a concern — especially important for grafted vines
- Plan dormant pruning work; sharpen and disinfect pruning tools
- Order new vines early — certified disease-free stock in popular varieties sells out quickly
