Hazelnut & Filbert Trees
European hazelnuts — aka filberts — are easy to grow and remarkably productive. By far the most important nut crop grown commercially in the Pacific Northwest, and one of the fastest-bearing nut trees for home orchards. Two varieties required; matching them correctly is everything.

Why grow hazelnuts?
European hazelnuts (Corylus avellana) — known as filberts in the Pacific Northwest — are among the most productive and low-maintenance nut trees available to home growers. They bear in just 4–5 years (compared to a decade or more for walnuts), tolerate a wide range of soils, and once established produce abundantly with far less intervention than most fruit trees require.
Commercially, hazelnuts are by far the most important nut crop grown in the Pacific Northwest — Oregon produces roughly 99% of the U.S. commercial crop. The same varieties that drive that industry are now available to home growers nationwide, thanks to decades of work by the OSU Hazelnut Breeding Program. Raintree sources the best new blight-resistant cultivars from that program: productive, flavorful, and developed for the disease pressures real growers face.
Hazelnuts are also uniquely ornamental among nut trees. They flower in mid-winter — long before any leaf appears — producing the long, dangling yellow catkins that are one of the most striking sights in a dormant garden. By late summer those flowers have become clusters of ripe, sweet nuts. The trees are attractive in all seasons and can serve double duty as ornamental screening or hedging while producing an edible crop.
The most important decision before planting is selecting two compatible varieties. Hazelnuts are not self-fertile, and not all pairs are compatible — bloom timing and genetic compatibility must both align. Review individual variety descriptions carefully and confirm pollinizer pairs before ordering.
Pollination — how it works
Hazelnuts are wind-pollinated — a key difference from most fruiting plants, which rely on bees. They are also not self-fertile: each variety requires pollen from a different, compatible variety to set nuts. Both genetic compatibility and bloom timing must align for effective pollination.
Hazelnuts have specific pollen/egg genome requirements that make some variety pairs compatible and others incompatible, even when bloom timing overlaps. Two plants of the same variety will not pollinate each other — the pollinizer must be a different variety. Plant pollinizers within 50 feet of each other with no line-of-sight obstructions blocking wind between them. Confirm compatibility in individual variety descriptions before ordering.
The PNW maritime climate — cool, wet winters with regular wind — is nearly ideal for hazelnut pollination. Humid, breezy mid-winter conditions are exactly what catkin pollen needs to travel and reach female flowers. Washington growers (outside the Oregon shipping restriction) can grow hazelnuts with the same varieties and management used in Oregon's commercial industry.
Choosing varieties
Raintree carries the best blight-resistant European cultivars from the OSU Hazelnut Breeding Program, plus Rutgers-developed hybrid varieties for eastern and midwestern growers. The varieties below are currently part of the Raintree catalog; specific availability varies seasonally. All listed below are prohibited from shipping to Oregon (an OR Department of Agriculture restriction to protect commercial growers). Hazelnuts are not self-fertile — every variety needs a different compatible pollinizer.
Eastern Filbert Blight (EFB), caused by the fungus Anisogramma anomala, devastated Oregon's hazelnut industry after arriving in the Pacific Northwest in the 1970s. The OSU Hazelnut Breeding Program developed resistant cultivars — first released in 2005 and refined continuously since. OSU Extension reported in 2024 that a potentially more aggressive EFB strain was detected in some Oregon commercial orchards; new varieties with stronger resistance are in development. For home growers outside Oregon, current OSU varieties perform very well with significantly reduced disease management compared to older susceptible types.
OSU blight-resistant European hazelnuts
The PNW-bred releases — adapted to Pacific Northwest climate and the most relevant choices for Washington and other PNW growers (excepting Oregon, where these cannot be shipped). All require a different early-blooming OSU variety as a pollinizer.

Hybrid hazelnuts for the East and Midwest
Not recommended for PNW growing. These Rutgers-developed (Corylus avellana × americana) hybrids are bred for the eastern and midwestern climates where EFB pressure is most aggressive. They require Somerset or Raritan as cross-pollinizers among themselves.

For Washington and other PNW growers (Oregon excepted), choose OSU-bred varieties: McDonald, Wepster, and Polly-O. These were developed and tested specifically for PNW conditions and EFB pressure. The Rutgers hybrid varieties (Raritan, Somerset, The Beast™) were bred for eastern and midwestern climates and carry the "Not for PNW" designation in Raintree's catalog for this reason — they are not adapted to PNW growing conditions.
Size, form, and siting
Tree or hedge?
Hazelnuts are naturally multi-stemmed large shrubs or small trees. With regular pruning they can be maintained in two distinct forms — choose based on your space and goals before planting:

Sunlight
Plant where trees receive a minimum of 8 hours of direct sunlight measured in early summer (late June through early August). Adequate sun triggers flower bud initiation for the following growing season — without it, there will be no flowers and no nuts regardless of tree health. Nut ripening and flavor development are also directly tied to sun-driven carbohydrate production.
Soil
Hazelnuts tolerate a wide range of soil types provided drainage is good. Target a soil pH of 6.3–6.8. Before planting, work 1–2 inches of plant-based organic matter (compost, peat, or coconut coir) into an area 1.5–2× the diameter of the planting hole to a depth of about one foot. Apply a 2–4 inch mulch layer of straw, leaves, or wood chips after planting to build soil structure and retain moisture through establishment. Keep mulch pulled back 4–6 inches from the trunk at all times.
Climate
Hazelnuts are hardy in USDA Zones 5–9 and prefer cool to moderately warm summers. They need humid, windy weather during their mid-winter bloom — that humidity is what helps catkin pollen travel and reach female flowers effectively. Avoid very hot, dry summer climates: low humidity at bloom reduces pollination success, and extreme summer heat stresses trees adapted to temperate and maritime conditions.
Hazelnuts are not well-suited to long-term container cultivation. For those who want to experiment, a final container size of at least 25–30 gallons is needed. Increase pot size gradually over several years rather than jumping immediately to a large container. Use quality potting mix with added compost — do not use garden soil in containers. The two-variety pollination requirement makes container culture logistically challenging for most home growers.
Planting and establishment
When to plant
Hazelnuts can be planted anytime during the dormant season. January and February are ideal months in most climates — this coincides with the bloom period, allowing you to observe the flowering process in the first season. In colder climates, wait until the ground is workable before planting.
How to plant
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the roots. Backfill with native soil amended with organic matter worked into the surrounding planting area. Do not add fertilizer directly to the planting hole — it can burn new roots. Set the plant at the same depth it was growing previously. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a 2–4 inch mulch layer immediately, keeping it back from the crown.
Place pollinizer varieties within 50 feet of the primary variety, with no solid barriers — buildings, dense hedges, structures — blocking the wind path between them.
Watering
Target approximately 1 inch of water per week over the root zone during the growing season — equivalent to ¾–1 gallon per square foot, or 7–10 gallons weekly for a typical 3-foot planting area. Apply water deeply once or twice per week rather than lightly each day; the goal is consistent moisture at root depth, not a wet surface. The first two growing seasons — especially the first summer — are critical. Do not let young trees dry out during establishment.
In the PNW, established hazelnuts require relatively little supplemental irrigation once well-rooted, but consistent deep watering is essential in the first two seasons and during extended dry periods at any age.
Fertilization
Apply an all-purpose balanced fertilizer or 2–3 inches of well-rotted compost over the root zone from late winter through early June. Do not fertilize after early summer — late-season fertilization encourages soft new growth vulnerable to winter damage and increases disease pressure. A maintained mulch layer builds soil health over time. If the tree is producing a foot or more of new growth annually with healthy foliage, additional fertilizer may not be needed.
Pruning and training
Regular pruning keeps hazelnuts productive, well-shaped, and manageable. The goal differs by form: tree form develops a clear, open canopy that admits light; hedge form uses heavier annual pruning to maintain tighter structure.
Sucker removal
Hazelnuts naturally produce suckers from the base throughout the growing season. For tree form, remove suckers promptly to maintain the desired number of main trunks and direct energy into the canopy. For hedge form, manage suckering selectively to maintain density. Left unchecked, suckers spread the planting outward and reduce nut production on the main framework.
Prune during dry periods in late winter to reduce fungal infection risk through pruning wounds. Copper fungicide sprays at 2-week intervals from bud swell through early May help manage EFB on susceptible varieties — but the primary strategy for PNW home growers is always to select blight-resistant OSU varieties, not to rely on spray programs.
Harvest
At Raintree's location north of Mount St. Helens, WA, nuts are fully ripe by late August and begin dropping naturally in September. Harvest by gathering fallen nuts from the ground daily — this keeps you ahead of wildlife. Nuts can also be knocked from branches once their husks begin to loosen.
Blue jays begin harvesting filberts the moment nuts reach peak ripeness — often before the grower notices. Nuts dropped by jays are typically empty shells; the jays selectively take the best ones first. Start gathering as soon as you see jay activity in the tree canopy.
After harvest, cure nuts in a single layer in a dry, well-ventilated location for 2–3 weeks before storing. Properly cured hazelnuts keep for several months at room temperature, longer in the refrigerator, and up to one year or more in the freezer.
Common problems
The most serious disease threat to hazelnuts in North America, caused by the fungus Anisogramma anomala. Present throughout western WA and OR. Causes cankers and dieback on stems and branches, leading to decline and eventual death of susceptible trees. Planting OSU blight-resistant varieties is by far the most effective management approach.
- Symptoms: Sudden twig and stem dieback July–September; dead leaves cling to the branch; vertical rows of evenly spaced small bumps or black ruptures (stromata) in bark below the dieback
- Choose resistant OSU-bred varieties as the primary defense — no spray program substitutes for this
- For susceptible varieties: Bordeaux or fixed copper spray at 2-week intervals from bud swell through early May
- Prune out infected shoots immediately on detection; cut well below visible symptoms; destroy — do not compost
- Infected trees may continue producing from suckers for several years; light infections may be managed by pruning alone
Deer browse hazelnut foliage readily and will pull young trees from the ground entirely. Large, soft hazelnut leaves are highly attractive to deer, particularly in late spring when new growth is most tender.

- Repellents provide short-term deterrence only; not reliable for season-long protection and require consistent reapplication

Rodents chew bark from trunk bases at ground level, typically under snow cover or in areas with heavy mulch. Voles and mice work from soil level and can enter root systems; rabbits chew up to 8 inches above ground. Girdling kills the stem above the injury.

Several aphid species feed on hazelnuts, causing leaf curl, distortion of new growth, and sooty mold from honeydew deposits. Rarely threatens established trees but can weaken young, establishing plants.
- Natural predators (ladybugs, parasitic wasps) often provide adequate control — encourage with habitat plantings such as dill or yarrow nearby
- Dislodge with a strong water spray
- Insecticidal soap, pyrethrin, or rotenone for heavier infestations
- Control ants, which protect aphid colonies from natural predators
- Monitor in late spring and summer; control is most important on young, establishing trees
Established in the PNW; can cause puncture-type feeding damage on nuts followed by decay and deformity in surrounding tissue. Brown spots may appear in stored nuts.
