Honeyberry & Haskap

The earliest-ripening edible berry in the northern garden — blooming before last frost and ripening ahead of strawberries. Native to boreal forests across the Northern Hemisphere, this exceptionally cold-hardy shrub is ideal for gardeners in Zones 2–8 who want something that thrives where others struggle.

Why grow honeyberry?

Honeyberry (Lonicera caerulea), also known as haskap or blue honeysuckle, occupies a unique ecological and culinary niche in the home garden: it is among the very first edible fruits to ripen each year, and one of the hardiest fruiting shrubs available anywhere. Native to boreal forests across the Northern Hemisphere — Russia, Japan, Canada, and parts of the United States — it evolved in climates far colder than most fruit crops can tolerate. Cornell Cooperative Extension confirms it is hardy to USDA Zones 1–8, performing most reliably in Zones 2–5 (Cornell CCE).

The flowers emerge in very early spring — Wisconsin Extension notes they appear six weeks before the last frost date and are hardy to at least 20°F. This means that in climates where late spring frosts regularly damage fruit blossoms of apples, peaches, and cherries, honeyberry is already setting fruit before those crops have even flowered. The berries ripen in late spring to early summer — roughly concurrent with strawberries — giving you fresh fruit weeks ahead of most other crops.

The berries themselves are elongated, dark blue to black, and described consistently as a complex sweet-tart blend of blueberry, raspberry, and black currant (Cornell CCE). They are exceptionally high in Vitamin C, antioxidants, and anthocyanins. For cold-climate gardeners in particular — Zones 2–5 — honeyberry fills a gap that no other common fruiting shrub adequately addresses. It has essentially no serious pest or disease problems, tolerates wet soils better than most fruit crops, and requires minimal maintenance once established.

ℹ Honeyberry vs. Haskap — what's the difference?

Both names refer to Lonicera caerulea, but the terms have come to indicate different subspecies. "Haskap" specifically refers to Japanese varieties (subspecies emphyllocalyx) developed in a breeding program at Oregon State University and Hokkaido, Japan. "Honeyberry" is the commercial name for Russian and Kuril varieties (subspecies kamtschatica and edulis) developed partly at the University of Saskatchewan. Haskaps tend to be larger-fruited and somewhat better for fresh eating; Russian honeyberries tend to be more cold-hardy and better adapted to very short growing seasons. Both require cross-pollination with a different variety of the same subspecies or compatible subspecies — check variety pairing requirements carefully before purchasing (USU Extension; Cornell CCE).

Pollination — the critical decision

Honeyberry is not self-fertile. A single plant will not produce meaningful fruit. Two plants of different varieties with overlapping bloom times are required for fruit set (PFAF; Cornell CCE). This is the single most common mistake made with honeyberry and is the reason most single-plant honeyberries never produce. Always purchase two compatible varieties.

⚠ Compatibility is variety-specific — not all pairs work

Honeyberry pollination compatibility is more complex than for most fruiting shrubs. Matching varieties by bloom time is necessary but not always sufficient — some subspecies pairs are not reliably compatible. As a general rule: pair haskap varieties with other haskap varieties; pair Russian honeyberry varieties with other Russian honeyberry varieties, or use specifically recommended mixed pairs. OSU and University of Saskatchewan both publish variety pairing guides. Raintree's catalog notes which varieties are known to cross-pollinate effectively. If in doubt, ask before ordering.

Pollination requirements

Two different compatible varieties required. Position within 50 feet (bumblebee range). Bumblebees are primary pollinators — they are active at colder temperatures than honeybees and better suited to the early-spring bloom window. Avoid insecticides during bloom.

Early bloom caution

Flowers emerge 6 weeks before last frost (Wisconsin Extension). While flowers survive to at least 20°F, extended hard freezes can affect fruit set. In PNW and northern gardens, the early bloom is an advantage; in climates with late polar vortex events, monitor spring temperatures.

Choosing varieties

Variety selection for honeyberry is more complex than for most fruiting shrubs because of subspecies compatibility requirements, climate adaptation, and the significant differences between haskap and honeyberry types. The following are widely available well-tested varieties. Always verify pairing compatibility at the time of purchase.

Pacific Northwest note

Honeyberry is described in many sources as performing best in Zones 2–5. In the milder maritime PNW (western WA and OR, Zones 7–8), honeyberry is more challenging. The warm winters may not fully meet chill hour requirements, and the mild springs may result in irregular bud break. Some varieties have been successfully grown in the PNW, but this is not an ideal climate for the crop. If you're in the PNW and want to try honeyberry, haskap varieties selected at OSU (where Dr. Maxine Thompson specifically focused on Japanese varieties suited to Zone 5–6 climates similar to the northern Willamette Valley and Puget Sound) are the most likely to succeed. Talk to your local WSU or OSU Extension office about variety performance in your specific location.

Site selection and soil

Sun

Honeyberry requires full sun for reliable fruit production. PFAF is explicit: it does not fruit well in shade. A minimum of 8 hours of direct sunlight is the standard guidance across extension and academic sources. Unlike some fruiting shrubs that tolerate partial shade, honeyberry's fruit production drops sharply with reduced light. Choose the sunniest available site.

Soil

One of honeyberry's most useful attributes for home growers is its exceptionally wide soil pH tolerance. Wisconsin Extension confirms plants tolerate pH 5.5–8.0; USU Extension cites a native range that includes calcareous soils with pH as high as 7.7. The optimum range for high productivity is 5.5–6.5, but honeyberry will grow and fruit across a much broader range than blueberries require. This makes it an excellent choice where blueberry-suitable acid soils are not naturally available.

Honeyberry is also more tolerant of wet soils than most fruit crops. Wisconsin Extension notes it grows naturally in riverbed and marsh areas. It does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging but handles periodic wet conditions that would damage most fruiting shrubs. In heavy clay soils, improve drainage at planting with generous organic matter; in well-drained soils, honeyberry requires minimal amendment beyond a 1–2 inch compost incorporation at planting.

Spacing

Space plants 4–6 feet apart within a row; rows 8–10 feet apart. For a home garden with two varieties for cross-pollination, plant them side by side within the same planting area — no more than 50 feet apart (bumblebee flight range). Plant size at maturity varies by variety from about 4–7 feet tall and similarly wide.

Watering and feeding

Honeyberry requires consistent moisture during the growing season. Target approximately 1 inch of water per week over the root zone. Honeyberry's tolerance for wet soils means it handles periodic overwatering better than most fruiting shrubs, but sustained waterlogging is still damaging — ensure drainage at the planting site.

Use a balanced all-purpose fertilizer or apply 2–3 inches of well-rotted compost over the root zone in early spring before growth begins. Honeyberry does not require specialized acid-formulated fertilizers the way blueberries do, given its wide pH tolerance. Avoid nitrogen-heavy fertilizers after early summer. If plants are producing at least one foot of new growth annually with healthy foliage, additional fertilizer is likely unnecessary.

Pruning and training

Honeyberry requires minimal pruning in the first four to five years — the focus during this period is establishing the shrub framework. Light shaping to remove crossing branches and dead wood is appropriate. Beginning around year 5–6, annual removal of the oldest, most unproductive canes at the base (cane renewal pruning) helps maintain vigor and productivity. Honeyberry fruits on wood from the previous season's growth — avoid removing too much of the young growth. Prune in late winter or early spring before growth begins.

Harvest

Honeyberry ripens in late spring to early summer — typically June in most temperate US climates, as early as late May in warmer locations, and as late as early July in the coldest zones. Cornell CCE notes that the earliest maturing varieties ripen about two weeks before strawberries in mid-June. The berries are dark blue-black, elongated, and slightly soft when fully ripe. They detach easily with a gentle touch when ready. A fully ripe honeyberry is sweet-tart and complex in flavor; an unripe one is noticeably tart and somewhat bitter.

One harvesting caution: ripe honeyberries drop from the plant readily in some varieties — check frequently at peak ripeness or you will lose berries to the ground. Some varieties have a "dry scar" where berries separate cleanly; others require care. Refrigerate harvested berries promptly; they are best used within a few days of harvest or frozen for longer storage. They freeze excellently — the berries maintain color, flavor, and nutritional value well.

⚠ Early harvesting cue — don't rely on color alone

Honeyberry berries turn blue several days before they are actually ripe. Color change alone is not a reliable indicator of full ripeness. Taste-test as the berries approach full color, and harvest when flavor is sweet with only pleasant tartness and no bitterness. A fully ripe berry will also detach easily from the stem. Harvesting too early produces an unpleasantly tart result even though the berry looks ripe.

Growing in containers

Honeyberry is more container-suitable than many fruiting shrubs — its moderate size and compact varieties make it manageable in pots. Use a final container size of at least 15–20 gallons. Use quality potting mix with added compost; do not use garden soil. Gradually increase container size over the first few years. A container planting still requires two compatible varieties for pollination — plan for two pots placed adjacent to each other. In Zone 6 and colder, container roots are vulnerable to freezing — move to an unheated but frost-protected structure in winter. Container plants require more frequent watering than in-ground plants and will need annual repotting or root pruning as they mature.

Common problems

No Fruit / Poor Fruit Set High — most common issue

The most frequently reported honeyberry problem — and almost always a pollination issue. A single plant will not produce meaningful fruit. Incompatible varieties or mismatched bloom times will also prevent fruit set. This is the problem to rule out first in any non-fruiting honeyberry.

  • Confirm two different compatible varieties are planted within 50 feet of each other
  • Verify bloom time overlap between varieties — consult the nursery or breeding program variety guides
  • In cold springs, bumblebee activity may be suppressed — hand-pollinate on a warm, dry morning using a soft brush to transfer pollen between open flowers
  • In the PNW, cool springs are common during the honeyberry bloom window — hand pollination is particularly worthwhile
Birds High at harvest

Birds will harvest ripe honeyberries aggressively. The early ripening window — before most other fruits are available — may intensify bird pressure. The dark blue color of ripe berries is highly visible and attractive.

  • Bird netting before berries begin to ripen is the most reliable protection
  • Harvest frequently — ripe berries drop from the plant and disappear quickly to birds
  • Reflective scare tape offers some short-term deterrence
Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) Moderate

Honeyberry's thin-skinned, soft-at-ripeness berries are susceptible to SWD. The late-spring to early-summer harvest window falls during an early-season period of SWD activity. Monitor and harvest promptly.

  • Monitor with SWD traps from bloom onward
  • Harvest frequently as fruit ripens; refrigerate promptly
  • Spinosad-based insecticides are effective when adults are detected at threshold; apply per label

Deer and Rabbits Moderate

Deer will browse honeyberry foliage, and rabbits can chew bark at the base of young canes. Both are more concerning during the establishment years when plants are small and vulnerable.

  • Hardware cloth cages protect young plants through their first two to three years
  • An 8-foot fence provides reliable protection in high-deer-pressure areas
  • Keep mulch pulled back from the base of canes
Aphids Low

Honeyberry is generally low-maintenance with respect to insects and disease. Aphids occasionally infest new growth but rarely seriously. Natural predators typically provide adequate control on established plants.

  • Strong water spray to dislodge aphids
  • Insecticidal soap for persistent infestations
  • Encourage natural predator habitat with nearby diverse plantings
