Why grow lingonberries?
Lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) are small, spreading groundcovers that have been cultivated and harvested by people in Scandinavia, northern Europe, and the boreal regions of North America and Asia for hundreds of years. The fruit is tart and bright — a distinctive flavor that balances sweetness and acidity in a way that is genuinely difficult to describe until you've tasted it fresh from the plant. It is nothing like the sweetened lingonberry jam or sauce available at import stores; vine-ripe lingonberries are complex, intensely flavored, and entirely their own thing.
As landscape plants, lingonberries are outstanding. They are low-growing, evergreen (in most climates), and attractive year-round — with glossy dark leaves, delicate bell-shaped spring flowers, and brilliant red fruit clusters in late summer. They work beautifully as edging plants, under plantings beneath acid-loving shrubs (blueberries, azaleas, rhododendrons), or as groundcover on slopes. Few edible plants pack this much ornamental value into such a compact, manageable form.
Lingonberries are also among the most cold-tolerant edible plants Raintree carries — hardy through Zone 3, they will thrive in climates that would challenge blueberries or other soft-fruit crops. Their low, spreading habit makes them naturally resistant to wind damage and easy to protect under snow.
The most important factor for success is soil pH. Lingonberries, like blueberries, require strongly acidic soil in the 4.5–5.5 range. In soils outside this range, the plants will struggle or fail regardless of other conditions. Testing and amending your soil before planting is essential.
Choosing varieties
Several named varieties of lingonberry are available, and choosing one suited to your region matters for productivity and flavor. Key differences between varieties include plant size, harvest timing, whether the variety produces a second crop, and how well suited it is to your climate. Because lingonberries are not self-fertile, you will need at least two different varieties to produce fruit — plan your variety selection with cross-pollination in mind from the start.
Lingonberries are not self-fertile and require a different variety as a pollinizer to produce fruit. Some varieties produce more pollen and are particularly effective pollinizers. Plant at least two different named varieties within 50 feet of each other, with no solid barriers (buildings, dense hedges) blocking the path between them. Bumblebees are the primary pollinators.

Where to plant
Sun requirements
Lingonberries need a minimum of 8 hours of direct sunlight measured in early summer (late June through early August) for best fruit production. Adequate sun exposure triggers the initiation of flower buds for the following season — without sufficient light, there will be no flowers and no fruit regardless of overall plant health. Fruit ripening and flavor development are also directly tied to the carbohydrate production driven by full sun exposure.
While lingonberries will tolerate partial shade and may survive under moderate tree canopy, productivity will be significantly reduced. In the Pacific Northwest, prioritize south- or southwest-facing exposures to maximize heat accumulation and sun hours through the growing season.
Soil requirements
Lingonberries perform best in well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter and a pH of 4.5–5.5. This is the same strongly acidic range required by blueberries — if you have successfully grown blueberries in your soil, lingonberries will likely adapt well. If your soil pH is higher than 5.5, the plants will struggle to access key nutrients even if those nutrients are present.
Test your soil pH before planting. To lower pH in alkaline soils, incorporate elemental sulfur according to your cooperative extension office's amendment rate recommendations for your specific soil type. Peat moss, acidic bark mulch, or pine needle mulch can help maintain low pH over time. Avoid using ground limestone or wood ash, which will raise pH in the opposite direction of what you need.
Improve the planting area by mixing one to two inches of plant-based organic matter — compost, peat moss, or coconut coir — into an area 1.5 to 2 times the diameter of the planting zone and up to one foot deep. Lingonberries have shallow, fibrous roots that do not tolerate waterlogging; avoid low spots or areas where water pools after rain.
Spacing
Allow sufficient space for both the top growth and root spread when selecting the planting location. Sizes below are typical managed dimensions, not maximum potential:

When planting two varieties for cross-pollination, position them within 50 feet of each other with no solid barriers blocking the path between them. Bumblebees are the primary pollinators and will readily move between plants at this range.
Western WA and OR soils are frequently already in the acidic range lingonberries prefer — test before amending. Lingonberries are excellent companion plants beneath established blueberry bushes, where the soil pH has often already been lowered and maintained. A maintained mulch of pine needles, oak leaves, or acidic wood chips helps hold pH down and conserves moisture through the drier summer months when supplemental irrigation is critical.
Soil preparation and planting
Plant container-grown lingonberries in early spring after the last frost date has passed, or in fall (Zone 6 and warmer) at least six weeks before the ground freezes. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball; backfill with the amended native soil. Set the plant at the same depth as it was in the container — planting too deeply can encourage crown rot. Do not add fertilizer directly to the planting hole, as concentrated fertilizer can burn tender new roots.
Water thoroughly after planting and apply a 2–4 inch mulch layer of pine needles, oak leaves, or wood chips immediately. Mulch conserves moisture, moderates soil temperature, suppresses weeds, and — with pine needles or acidic chips — helps maintain the low soil pH lingonberries require. Keep mulch pulled back 2–3 inches from the crown to prevent rot and discourage vole activity.
Lingonberries are slow to establish compared to some small fruits. Focus on root system development in the first growing season rather than expecting significant fruit production. Consistent moisture and weed control in the first two years will pay dividends in long-term productivity.
Growing in containers
Lingonberries are not ideal candidates for long-term container growing, but they can be grown successfully in containers for a few years before requiring transplanting to the ground.
If growing in a container, use a minimum 5-gallon container; broad, shallow containers suit the shallow root system well. Do not use soil from your garden — use a quality potting mix with added acidic compost or peat. For larger pots, choose a potting mix with some coarser particle size in addition to the fine material, to maintain drainage and aeration.
Gradually increase container size over the first several years rather than moving from a small pot directly to a very large one — this supports healthy root development and prevents waterlogging in excess soil volume. Make sure containers have excellent drainage; lingonberry roots will not tolerate standing water.
Container plants require more frequent watering and somewhat more frequent fertilization than in-ground plants. In Zone 6 and colder, move containers to an unheated but frost-protected structure in winter — container roots lack the insulation of surrounding ground soil and are more vulnerable to hard freezing.
For container culture, choose dwarf lingonberry varieties — their more compact habit and shallower spread are much more manageable in containers than standard-sized varieties. For cross-pollination in containers, grow two different dwarf varieties side by side on the same patio or deck.
Watering and fertilizing
Watering
Consistent moisture is one of the most important factors in successfully growing lingonberries. As a general guide, provide approximately 1 inch of water per week over the root zone during the growing season — equivalent to roughly ¾ to 1 gallon per square foot of soil surface, or 7–10 gallons per week for a typical three-foot-diameter planting area.
Apply water once or twice a week in deep waterings rather than lightly each day. Light daily watering produces a wet surface and dry root zone; lingonberry roots need consistent moisture to about one foot deep. The top inch or two of soil can feel dry while the plant remains adequately watered below. In fast-draining soils, water twice weekly.
In the Pacific Northwest, spring rainfall typically meets irrigation needs through June. Supplemental irrigation becomes critical from July through harvest — this is the period when fruit is sizing and developing flavor, and inadequate water directly reduces fruit quality. Drip irrigation at the base of the plants keeps foliage dry and reduces disease pressure.
In containers, water until the soil is thoroughly saturated and water comes out of the drainage holes. Allow the container to dry until the soil is dry to the touch 1–2 inches down before watering again. A plant that has wilted may be receiving either too much or too little water — check soil moisture before assuming drought stress.
Fertilizing
Use an all-purpose balanced fertilizer, or an acidifying fertilizer formulated for blueberries and other acid-loving plants. A couple of inches of well-rotted compost applied over the root zone annually in early spring is an effective and gentle approach. A generous mulch of pine needles, leaves, or straw around plants not only conserves moisture and controls weeds, but builds soil health over time by attracting earthworms and supporting beneficial soil organisms.
Avoid applying fertilizer after early summer. Late-season nitrogen encourages soft new growth that is more susceptible to winter cold damage. If plants are producing healthy new growth and have deep, glossy green foliage, they may not need additional fertilizer beyond an annual compost top-dressing. Excessive fertilizer can increase disease susceptibility and, in severe cases, harm the plants.
Harvest
Lingonberries ripen in late summer to early fall. Some varieties produce a second crop that ripens in late fall and may persist into early winter — this second flush is one of the features that makes lingonberries particularly valuable in the home garden, extending the fresh harvest season well past most other small fruits.
Ripe lingonberries are deep red, slightly softened, and detach easily from the plant. They are distinctly tart even when fully ripe — unlike a strawberry or blueberry, a ripe lingonberry is not sweet-forward. Taste is the best ripeness indicator: a fully ripe lingonberry has a bright, complex flavor balancing tartness and sweetness, without the grassy or astringent quality of unripe fruit.
Harvest by gently picking individual ripe berries or by using a berry comb or rake for larger plantings. Ripe lingonberries store well refrigerated for one to two weeks, and freeze exceptionally well for long-term storage. Traditional uses include lingonberry jam and sauce (the classic accompaniment to Swedish meatballs), compote, juice, and wine — but fresh lingonberries are also excellent eaten on their own or mixed into yogurt and oatmeal.
Not all lingonberry varieties produce a reliable second crop. If the late-fall second flush is important to you, confirm with Raintree's catalog or staff that the specific variety you are selecting is known to produce reliably under your regional conditions. In colder climates (Zone 3–5), the second crop may be limited or prevented by early frosts.
Common problems
Find out what insects and diseases are typical in your area before problems arise. Ask your local cooperative extension professional what to expect in your region — then you can make informed variety selections based on resistance information, or plan for managing expected issues. The following are the most common problems for lingonberry growers.
Symptoms
Browsed, shortened branches; leaves obviously munched or plants pulled up entirely. Lingonberry's low habit and tender leaves are attractive to deer, particularly in early spring when new growth is emerging.
- An 8-foot woven wire fence is most reliable — deer can jump standard 6-foot fences
- Hardware cloth cages protect individual plants during establishment
- Commercial repellents (such as "Deerchaser") may provide short-term deterrence but are not reliable for season-long protection
- Trained dogs patrolling the perimeter can be effective, but repellents alone generally are not consistent
Symptoms
Fruits disappear or have gaping holes; entire clusters stripped from the plant as fruit ripens. Birds — particularly robins, thrushes, and starlings — are attracted to the bright red berries.
- Bird netting draped over plantings is the most effective control during the harvest window
- Reflective bird scare tape can provide some deterrence
- Harvest promptly as fruit ripens — don't leave ripe fruit on the plant longer than necessary
Symptoms
Bark eaten in a band from soil level up, usually in snowy areas with mulch piled against the crown or tall grass at the base. Voles and mice chew close to ground level and into the root system; rabbits chew up to 8–10 inches above ground.
- Keep mulch pulled back 4–6 inches from the crown at all times — mulch against the crown creates a protected runway for voles in winter
- Keep grass and vegetation cleared 1–2 feet from the planting area
- Wrap the base of plants with vinyl tree guards or fine hardware cloth before snow cover arrives
- Check for damage in early spring when snow recedes
Symptoms
Leaves stippled or bronzed with very small crawling insects on the undersides. Webbing often present on leaf undersides or surrounding new shoot tips. Mite populations build rapidly in hot, dry weather, particularly when natural predators have been disrupted by pesticide use.
- Maintain adequate irrigation — water-stressed plants are significantly more susceptible
- Minimize broad-spectrum pesticide use to protect natural predators (predatory mites, lacewings)
- Insecticidal soap with ultra-light oil for active infestations
- Release predatory mites (Phytoseiidae) for persistent problems
- Dormant oil applied in late winter reduces overwintering mite egg populations; note that pyrethrin/rotenone sprays may lose effectiveness if mites develop resistance
Symptoms
Small (1/32–1/8"), pear-shaped insects that multiply rapidly on undersides of leaves and on stems. May be pink, green, black, or white. Leaves show red blisters or are curled downward; stems may turn black with sooty mold from honeydew deposits.
- Natural predators (ladybugs, parasitic wasps, lacewings) often provide adequate control — support them by avoiding broad-spectrum pesticides and planting habitat plants such as dill or yarrow nearby
- A strong water spray dislodges aphids from stems and shoots
- Insecticidal soap, pyrethrin, or rotenone for heavier infestations
- Control ants — they protect aphid colonies from natural predators in exchange for honeydew; treat ant colonies and apply sticky barriers to keep ants off the plant
Symptoms
Poking-type feeding damage followed by decay; deformity in tissue surrounding dead areas; brown spots in stored fruit. BMSB is established in the PNW and can affect lingonberry fruit, particularly as it ripens.

- If found overwintering near your home in fall, use a vacuum rather than crushing — crushing releases their defensive odor
Seasonal care calendar
- Keep mulch pulled back from crowns; inspect and refresh trunk guards protecting plants from vole and rabbit damage

Lingonberries begin flowering in mid- to late spring in the PNW. Cool, wet springs can suppress bumblebee activity — if bloom-period temperatures are below 50°F for extended periods, fruit set may be reduced. Ensure at least two varieties are planted for cross-pollination; this is especially important in cool springs when bees may be limited.

- For varieties that produce a second crop, watch for a new flush of bloom or developing berries after the first harvest; continue irrigation through this second fruiting period
- Complete harvest of any remaining berries; in colder zones, harvest before hard frost as fruit quality declines after a freeze
