Malus domestica 'Almata'

Believed to have originated in Kazakhstan, specifically in the region around the city of Almaty (formerly known as Alma-Ata). The name "Almata" itself is derived from this city, which in turn comes from the Turkic word alma, meaning "apple." This region is historically significant as the likely birthplace of the wild apple species Malus sieversii, which is considered one of the primary ancestors of the modern cultivated apple.

Made available for growers in the United States from the University of Minnesota, the Almata apple is very winter hardy, with fruit ripening in October.

Almata apples are known for their unique flavor, crisp texture, and distinct color, with a slight tartness balanced by sweetness. Red leaves and bright pink spring blossoms make it a great edible ornamental. It makes a stunning pinkish-red applesauce and jelly, great for gift giving.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I am interested in the Almata red apple. Can you tell me if this apple tree is at all disease resistant? I am tired of buggy mealy apples and want at least some resistance as we seldom spray here. I have some that are perfect without spray but want the red color! Your advice here? Also, is this apple good to eat fresh...is it tart and crisp or mealy?

Almata is partly resistant to powdery mildew, but is susceptible to fireblight. What diseases do you typically have to control for?

  • Could I pollinate an Almata Apple with a Pink Cloud Crabapple?

    Absolutely yes.

  • What is the best pollinator for this apple tree. I do have Arkansas blacks now

Anything in bloom groups 2 - 4. Refer to our Apple Growing Guide for a complete list.

  • How many chill hours needed?

    800+ chilling hours

  • Would this pollinate and/or be pollinated by a Honeycrisp Apple tree? What about a State Fair apple tree?

Almata is a bloom group 3 apple, which means it will pollinate Honeycrisp (bloom group 4) and State Fair (bloom group 2). Honeycrisp and State Fair will not pollinate each other however as they are too far apart in bloom times.
