Vasconcellea x heilbornii

An ideal edible and ornamental houseplant, hardy to 28° F. Pronounced buh-BAH-co, it has a beautiful trunk and tropical leaves and is easily grown in a 15-gallon container. The plant grows to 6' tall and produces several amazing ten inch long, bright yellow, delicious papaya fruits each year. One gallon size.

  • Where is the origin of Babaco Papaya?

    The babaco, also known as the mountain papaya, is believed to have originated in the central south highlands of Ecuador. It is a natural hybrid of the Columbian mountain papaya (Carica pubescens) and the wild papaya (Carica stipulata) from Ecuador. The babaco was first identified in the 1920s and has been cultivated in Ecuador since before the arrival of Europeans.

    Indoors they can, but not planted outside.

Babaco Papaya Freeze-damaged

Unfortunately, the plant arrived with severe freeze damage from the long shipment to Georgia. Damage was extensive to the tip and at least 10 inches down the trunk.
