Vaccinium vitis-idaea 'Balsgard'

This heavy-bearing commercial variety was developed by the Lingonberry Program of the Swedish University of Agriculture. It has a 10" tall, compact stature and a less spreading habit than many other varieties. Its flavorful fruit is the largest of all lingonberries! Pair it with 1 Red Pearl as a pollinizer per 10 other plants for highest yields.

Scandinavians love these fantastic edible evergreen ground covers that produce delicious cranberry-like berries great for sauces, jellies and cooking. They are attractive and easy-to-grow in your garden with bright red fruits the size of a small blueberry. These beautiful and productive groundcover plants are under-utilized and a must for American gardeners in cooler regions. They are also great grown in a pot when the sunny side is protected. Hardy to USDA Zones 4.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I live in NY. Will deer and/or squirrels eat lingonberries and cranberries? They should be planted in the fall?

Deer probably not, squirrels possibly, birds definately. The can be planted in the fall or spring.

  • I'm new to lingonberries, and I just received and planted 4 of your Red Pearl plants. 1. Should I have planted a different variety for better pollination? 2. If so, would the Balsgard variety be a good choice? 3. What time of year would be best for planting here in Rockport, WV (Zone 6a)? Thanks

    1. Yes, they need cross pollination.

    2. Balsgard is a great choice, but any will work.

    3. Anytime before temperatures are consistently over 70 degrees. If you temps are higher than that you should hold them in pots until the fall.

Lovely plants

My 10 plants arrived well packaged (thoughtfully geared to sustainability and minimal plastic) and in live condition. New growth and blooms were present on all plants though the blooms will likely not result in fruit this year as the plants establish and divert energy, but we shall see. One plant was loose and uprooted from its pot with minimal roots still attached. Even with good packaging (these plants were secured in a heavily reinforced cardboard frame) I imagine these things happen in shipping. I replanted it into its pot and have been caring for it indoors in hopes it re-roots and recovers. The other plants were planted the next evening and are looking vigorous.
