Ribes nigrum 'Ben Lomond'

BLACK CURRANTS ARE PROHIBITED TO DE, ME, NC, NJ, WV, VA, MI, MA, OH& RI. Rust resistant varieties may be shipped to OH & MI

The most popular commercial variety in Scotland because it is a very heavy producer of large berries with the traditional strong, pungent flavor, and also resistant to white pine blister rust. The Ben series, named after the mountains of Scotland, are among the easiest to grow and highest-quality black currants in the world.

This bush is compact, upright to 5 feet tall and easy to grow and prune. Reliably self fruitful, but best production with another variety of black currant for cross pollination. Ripens mid-July. Better suited for areas without a mix of summer heat and humidity.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Zone 6a does anyone have experience growing it in this zone in Northeast Oklahoma I have lost a couple of a different type

Oklahoma is likey too hot and too dry for currant plants. You may have luck with morning sun only locations and extra water, but there are some plants that just aren't fit for some areas.

  • Is zone 8A ok to plant Ben Lomond Black Currant?

It should be fine yes. Currants don't like harsh afternoon sun or too much heat.

Hardiest plants I've ever had!

Got my 2 this summer in the healthiest condition I have ever gotten from a shipped nursery plant! Had plenty of buds with leaves around 2 feet tall. Started off strong but wound up with the worst luck. After several weeks of heat waves, webworms, powdery mildew, and one stubborn bird. My last one finally kicked it just last week so they are definitely HARDY plant. I'll definitely be ordering again with hopefully better luck.

Big Fat Juicy Plants

Fabulously HEALTHY black current bushes, 3 feet long and bursting with buds. They already have several years of growth. Excellent value.

healthy plants

bare root plants packed very well. I was delayed putting my plants in the ground almost a month, kept them cool moist and shaded. All the plants (2 gooseberry, 4 black currant) have taken hold and look pretty good to me.
Looking forward to fruit hopefully next season. Thanks!
