Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty'

A spectacular edible ornamental bush for your yard, Black Beauty grows about 10' tall with deep, dusky, burgundy/purple foliage. Lemon-scented masses of pink flower clusters smother the bush in early summer, contrasting perfectly with the foliage. Black Beauty bears a surprisingly large yield of edible black berries in early fall.

This was one of the first of the ornamental varieties of European elder, and remains one of the best for both vivid leaf color and fruit yield. From the East Malling Research Station in England. P.P. 12,305. Plant with any other variety of S. nigra for best production from both plants.

Despite Raintree's mess-up it survived

I was going to be on vacation when my plant was scheduled to arrive. I contacted Raintree to see if it could be rescheduled. A very pleasant fellow assured me it could and he rescheduled it for the week after I returned. Instead it arrived 4 days before I returned and sat on my front porch all that time. I contacted Raintree who told me it had been shipped because no one noticed that it had been flagged to ship the following week. They also reminded me that it was guaranteed. The good news is that I didn't need the guarantee. It survived and appears to be growing.
