Prunus persica 'Black Boy'

A rare, hardy, heritage peach cultivar that is leaf curl resistant and has a wonderfully rich flavor. Dark reddish purple skin and flesh have resulted in its name. It ripens late in the  season and is self fertile - perfect for growers with long, hot summers.

Known mainly now in New Zealand, it is related to the Peche de Vigne, the black peach of France. Its fragrant, juicy flesh is highly prized eaten fresh and for preserves.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • What are the chill hours for the black boy 0each?

As a heritage variatey it can be hard to pin down chill hours, but our best guess is 800+

  • cling or freestone?

    Freestone!

  • How would it do in maritime climates with cool summers? I'm in zone 9b on the coast

It will do well, if you have Peach Leaf Curl in your area though just give it a spray of copper fungicide in the early spring.

  • How far apart should the Black Boy Peach trees be planted?

16 feet apart, on center, will be fine

  • Will this peach thrive in the Western Washington/Centralia area?

    Yes it does quite well!

  • Can it be grown in a container?

For a time, but it will eventually outgrow it.

  • Mature height?

At maturity, on this rootstock, this peach can reach heights of 18 feet if not pruned and maintained.

  • How big is the tree when it's shipped, and what is the age

4'-5' tall tip to tip and 3 years old when dug

Trees look healthy

The trees arrived as promised and were healthy. I planted them 2 weeks ago and so far so good. I hope they grow well and produce beautiful purple peaches. I think they will.

Nice tree

The Black Boy tree came on time and very nicely packed. I was impressed with the tree and very impressed with the ample root structure. I have no doubt this tree will thrive.

Beautiful tree

Great looking bare root tree. It has not leafed out yet but looks healthy. I've always had great luck with Raintree. Thank you for another great tree.

Very unique fruits!

I bought this tree in 2019, and only in 2022 did it bear fruits. It bore fruits for a second time in 2023. The only issue I have is the name of the variety sounding racially insensitive. Rather than “Black Boy” or “Indian Blood”, I call it “Raven Haven”, due to the dark flesh and juice. Fruits are maroon on the very edge, under the skin, but they get more of a white burst towards the pit. When you slice them, the dark red juice bleeds into the paler part of the fruit, towards the pit area.
In Michigan, this cultivar is a late-season producer, in late September or early October, which thus extends peach season by a month. When fruit is optimally ripe, it is moderately sweet, and slightly tangy. I personally like to remove the outer skin from the fruits most of the time.
All in all, if you’re looking for a late producer, this would be the one to grow!
