Prunus tomentosa 'Blanca'

Hardy to -40F! Harvest an abundance of flavorful, tart cherry-like fruit in early summer, from beautiful, bushy, naturally dwarfing trees.  The 1/2 inch fruit can be eaten fresh or used in pies or jelly. This cherry relative is native to central Asia and is a popular fruiting plant in Russia. A natural sport, white Nanking cherries were found in Alberta, Canada, producing a crop of sweet white fruit.

Nanking cherries grow into wide, bushy 10-12 foot tall trees or can be planted 4-5 foot apart to make an edible hedge. Exceptionally cold-tolerant and widely adapted, it is also tolerant of drought and needs a well-drained soil. Plant two seedlings for pollination.

Hardy to USDA Zone: 3

Mature Height: 8'-12'

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: June - July

Pollination: Needs a pollinizer

Size: 2 Quart Pot

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • If I plant one of these with one of your regular P. Tormentosa seedlings, will that work for pollination?

    Yes that will work fine.

  • What varieties are good pollinizers for the Blanca?

These are seedling so you just need two.

Looks Good!

Really excited about this one, and hoping the white cherries fool the birds into eating from my red Nanking cherry instead, leaving these white ones for me! The plant arrived in fine shape. Some foliage was crusty and didn't recover, as is to be expected following a cross-country trip, but I have no doubt it will be fine. Grateful that Raintree offers this cultivar!
