Sambucus canadensis 'Bob Gordon'

Bob Gordon selected this very productive cultivar with large clusters of flavorful purple berries in 1999 in Osceola, Missouri, and it has become a staple of a regional elderberry-growing industry. This variety grows 8' or more tall and is loaded with clusters of fruit that droop down, usually below the foliage. This keeps birds from robbing fruit from the bushes, making this variety particularly valuable for growers visited by large flocks of wild birds! You can choose to cut the bush to the ground each winter to control its size and each year it will produce fruit on first year wood.

Plant a different variety of S. canadensis nearby to receive the best yields on both plants.

  • What is 'Pollination: Partially Self Fertile'? Do I need more than one tree to Pollinate?

    Partially self fruitful means it will fruit without cross pollination, but will fruit MORE with cross pollination with another variety of S. canadensis 

  • Looking for elderberry bush and I live in the Midwest in Missouri and not sure what I am looking for ? Can elderberry be grown inside with a grow light or just planted in ground outside or in pots, outside and inside ? Want to make elderberry juice. Thank you. Have a great day :) R

    Bob Gordon is hardy to zone 4 so it should be fine. The Midwest Elderberry Cooperative is a good rescource for growing elderberries in your area.

  • Hi- ordered & received a bareroot York & the Bob Gordon elderberry in a pot- both plants look great as they are leafing out. My question is the Bob Gordon looks like a vine, & came in a pot w/ a bamboo cane as a vine might come. Is this the bob gordon elderberry, or actually some type of vine by mistake.... do the potted elderberries arrive & grow at first like this?

    They are just babies and it is common practice to stake them even though they are not vines.

Great roots

Ordered 4 varieties of elderberries. Arrived well and securely packaged. Healthy vigorous plants. When planting I observed very healthy viable rich root systems. Now will have to wait till spring to see how they do but could not have received better stock for planting.

Healthy plants!

Customer Service was very helpful. When UPS lost my order, Raintree Nursery was great at helping resolve the issue. When the replacement arrived, the Elderberry bushes look healthy despite the long travel! Packaged well! I look forward to getting them in the ground! I'm very pleased with the quality of plants, customer service, and growing tips! Would highly recommend.

Arrived and planted, has very few leaves, much less than the other two varieties I ordered along with the Bob Gordon. will have to wait and see.
