Prunus x 'Candy Heart'

Famed fruit breeder Floyd Zaiger has crossed a cherry with a Japanese plum to create a wonderful new fruit he calls a Pluerry. Candy Heart's skin is dark speckled red and the delicious and uniquely flavored flesh is amber/red. It ripens after most cherries and Japanese plums and is pollinized by the Sweet Treat Pluerry or a later blooming Japanese Plum. Until very recently Cherry Plums were just a name for small plums, but now we have true crosses that incorporate cherry flavor into what looks like a plum.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I have a Shiro plum already. Will it pollinate this Pluerry?

Probably yes, it needs an Asian plum.

  • Does weeping santa rosa plum pollinate the same as a regular santa rosa plum would? Ty

Yes! For pollination purposes they are identical.

  • So if I don't have any peach, plum or apricot trees and I want to plant this Pluerry, I need to also plant an Asian plum, such as a Santa Rosa?

Yes, it will only pollinate with other pluerries and Asian plums. Santa Rosa is best, but other Asian plums are usable.

  • Would a Flavor King pluot work as a pollinizer for this tree?

    Yes they should be compatible.

  • Can I use a burgundy plum as a pollinizer?

Candy heart needs an Asian plum to cross pollinate with, Santa Rosa is best.

  • How far apart should I plant multiple semi-dwarf pluerrys?

    14-16 foot centers

  • I have a Santa Rosa plum tree. Will this work as a pollinator for the Candy Heart Pluerry? Many htanks!

    Yes it should work great!

Candy Heart Pluerry

Arrived in perfect condition. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it had initially been pruned at knee height and had formed 3 strong branches. I’m a year ahead of where I’d be if it was just a smaller whip. Looking forward to seeing the fruit.

The tree showed up in great shape and currently pushing foliage. Time will tell on fruit quality. I have never had a bad shipment from Raintree.

Candy Heart Pluerry, best fruit in my yard

I have over 50 taste test winning fruit trees in my yard. I purchased 2 candy heart pluerry trees in 2016 under the rcommendation from the nursery. I live in Riverside Ca, and was originally worried about the chill hours required, we only get 200-300 chill hours. Well, do not fear, this tree flowers at 150 hours, excellent for southern ca. The fruit is spectacular, best eating fruit tree in my yard. This is a special tree and I wish my nursery would order some. I havent seen it since it premeired in 2016.
