Fragaria moschata 'Capron'

The musk, or hautbois strawberry, is a species of strawberry native to Europe - found growing from Scandanavia, into Eastern Europe and south into Italy. They are cultivated widely in private home gardens as a groundcover in both sunny and shady areas. The flavor is rich, sweet and intense - a cross of strawberry and pineapple!

Both male and female plants are hardy and can survive in both cold winters and hot summers. 1 male will pollinize up to 5 female plants. Musk strawberries are cultivated commercially on a small scale, particularly in Italy. Plants are slightly more productive than Profumata plants, and also produce a small fall crop. Sold in 4" pots.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Do the musk strawberries send out runners like the common strawberries?

They do, though far less aggressively and they will be out competed by all grasses and most weeds.

  • Will these cross pollinate with the more common domestic strawberries varieties like shuksan or kong etc? Thanks

No, they are not compatible. You will need a male musk strawberry for pollination.

  • If there are male and female plants how do I know which I've gotten? Seems you should lable the plants by their sex

All plants named and sold as "Capron Musk" are female. Our male plants are sold under the label "Male Musk" to avoid confusion.

This one was the first to bloom of all my plants (had an order of many alpines and a profumata musk as well)! The berries are great, definitely unique but not small like alpines! Kinda remind me of June bearing strawberries just a bit smaller! Great plants, great shipping! Very happy!
