Colossal Grafted Chestnut
Castanea sativa x crenata 'Colossal'
USDA Prohibits shipping chestnuts to Arizona.
Such big nuts from a "small" tree! Colossal is a hybrid between Castanea sativa (European chestnut) and Castanea crenata (Japanese chestnut). This is one of the most-planted chestnuts in commercial orchards currently, but the variety's smaller mature size makes it especially well-suited for home gardeners, too. Colossal is a pollen-sterile producer of lots of big, tasty nuts, and it needs a reliable pollinizer to produce its nuts. We recommend another grafted pollen producer, like Precoce Migoule, or Marigoule, as a pollinizing partner. An early and reliable producer, (grafted trees should start producing 3 years after planting), but not blight resistant.
