QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Will this do well in St Augustine Fl if I plant it now (July)? Zone 9b.

No, this is not the time of year to plant plums.

  • Does this tree have any resistance to black knot fungus?

No, this tree does not have black knot resistance.

  • Will this tree be affected by the rust on surrounding Bradford pear trees?? In what size pot does the tree arrive?

Plums are not susceptible to pear rust so this tree should be unaffected. This product ships bareroot.

  • I notice on the combo mirabelle plum tree it says self fertile, but when i check out the varieties that make up the combo most of them say they require a pollinator. is the combo tree self fertile because of the 1 or 2 varieties that can be self fertile? Would it still be best to also have another tree specifically for pollination?

This a multi-grafted tree, with several varieties of Mirabelle plums on a single tree. They will cross pollinate each other, so the tree is functionally self fertile. If the tree were to lose too many varietal limbs it would no longer be self fertile.

  • Will these do well in California Bay Area? Planting zone 9B? I’m thinking about surprising my sister with one of these as a gift

They should do very well in the Bay Area of California. Make sure you get another European plum, such as Victoria to ensure good pollination.

  • I live in Minnesota in zone 4(b). Would I be able to grow these trees, and if so, what special care would give them the best chance to survive our winters.

These plums are hardy to zone 5. With a lot of care, including heavy annual mulching and even covering, you could grow them, but with a very slim margin for error.

  • Are these resistant to root rot (Armillaria) fungus?

    Not specifically no.

Finally my own mirabelle and multiple choices

I was looking for a Mirabelle for years. When I finally found them I had difficult choice between varieties. Raintree is the only nursery that provides all of them AND a multi grafted option so you can try several kinds. My tree arrived very healthy and is still growing. It's flowering heavily this spring.

Sturdy tree: Arrived in great shape

This is not a little whip of a tree. Sturdy and well put together. It is already pushing out leaves. Will severely limit fruit this year so that it can concentrate on growing its root system. Very happy

Very Happy

The short -- Planted this tree Spring of 2022. Very heavy crop on all grafts in summer 2024 and had to thin it out several times. Absolutely delicious.

The long--
Planted the three in a 3ft hole with a mound in the center. I used a pitch fork to break up the edges and stab into the sides of holes (This ensures not a clean solid barrier and prevents root wrapping. Mixed native soil with peat moss and old compost. Soaked roots for 24 hours prior and kept it in water while planting. When I planted I put mycos directly on roots. Use 2 inches+ of mulch in a 3 ft circle around base. I watered consistently and heavily for the first 2 years and nothing this year.

I let the tree grow without pruning for the first 2 years. I also did not allow any fruit for the first 2 years. 3rd year tons of fruit. The tree has fairly even distributed grafts -- just make sure you prune them to prevent one from taking over completely.

Very happy with this tree. Just keep in mind a combo tree takes just a bit more thought and attention when pruning.
