QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Seckel an Comice are they good pollinators ? I currently have Moonglow an Kiefer

They are both late-season bloomers and will cross-pollinate fine.

  • i have pear scab in my neighborhood, is the Comice pear resistant to pear scab ??

Yes, it is one of the few pears that is scab resistant.

  • Will a Conference Pear be a good type of pear tree to pollinate a Comice Pear tree? If not, then what kind of pear tree will pollinate a Comice Pear tree?

Conference blooms early, while Comice blooms late and they may not cross pollinate. You will need a mid season pollinator like Honeysweet or Atlantic Queen for cross pollination. Check out our European Pear Growing Guide for more information.

  • Is this Comice pear bare root? If potted, how big is the pot? How tall is the tree upon delivery?

It is bare rooted and 4'-5' tall on delivery

Husky, straight little tree

My pear tree is small, which I expected. It is, however nice and straight and husky. Satisfied.

Root Damage

Ordered 6 trees, 4 apple, 2 Pear. This pear had significantly smaller root structure and some damage during shipping/packing with the other trees. Roughly speaking it had about half the roots of the other trees, and a large main section was snapped upon unboxing. All the trees were pruned back to 4 shortened branches and a shortened main stem. All 4 apples took with strong growth. Both pear trees seem stunted, our other warren pear has some minimal growth compared to the apples but is doing well and healthy. Our Comice pear is unlikely to survive, there has been no new growth and most of the leaves are shriveling up and falling off. I regret not taking a picture of the root stock, at the time I figured it was normal yet very visibly worse condition than the other trees we received. This will likely put me a year behind as the tree is unable to survive the long summer days with such a damaged roots.
Raintree's guarantee is that the tree will produce leaves not that it will survives... Well our tree had just enough life to produce leaves but unable to actually survive the longer summer days with such small roots. I will hopefully update this review if our tree manages to survive the summer. I can only hope that despite the leaves, some roots are growing and it can recover.

Hello Benjamin, thank you for letting us know about your experience with your order and the Comice Pear. How is it doing now? If it did not make it through the summer heat, we would be happy to provide you with store credit toward a replacement for the following season. If you could send us a photo update, that would be great. Please reach out to use at help@raintreenursery.com so we can help make it right! Best, Rye (Customer Service Manager)
