Cydonia oblonga 'Krymskaya'

Crimea quince, also called Krymskaya, is a high quality Ukrainian cultivar. Prized among the many varieties for it's deep and complex flavor, Krymskaya can be eaten raw if sliced thin, but really shined when cooked.

North American gardeners can now enjoy a quince with a pineapple-like flavor that is sweet enough to eat fresh. The medium size “aromatic” fruit is among the best of thousands of varieties from the Black Sea region of Russia and Turkey. The disease resistant tree produces round, yellow fruit, which ripens in October and needs to be stored on the window until it starts to soften. Like other quinces, the uncooked texture is dense, but it’s nice when thinly sliced and it is excellent for cooking.

At the turn of the 20th century almost every rural family had a fruiting quince tree they relied on for medicine, pectin, and fragrant, long-lasting fruits. The varieties we offer have delightful pineapple-like flavors. They are prized for cooking, jelly making, and adding to apple cider. Quince trees are self fertile and showy, with big white blossoms in late spring and unusual, fuzzy yellow fruits in fall.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • You claim that this is disease resistant, does it include leaf blight resistance?

Yes, Crimea (also called Kyrmskaya) is specifically resistant to leaf spot and rust; however, it is not specifically resistant to pseudomonas that can show on the leaves.

  • Is this plant younger since it is 1 gallon pot?

Likely yes, it is probably a 2 year old tree.

First crop made great preserves

The Crimea Quince I planted 3 years ago produced 4 large fruits which I picked in the 2nd week of October this year. I let them sit in a warm place on my plant stand then processed them into a lumpy sauce which I sealed in pint jars. The aroma and flavor are incredible. Tastes great over vanilla ice cream!!
The other quince trees I have also produced fruit which I left on the trees a bit longer. They do better I found if they have filtered afternoon shade.

Arrived healthy

Quince trees are not easy to find in US.

The little potted tree arrived well packed. I left it inside for a week, and there are few healthy branches growing.
It's planted, protected with a fence and we'll see how it goes.

Outstanding

Tree arrived in good condition and well packaged. I have ordered from other nursery and Raintree has been the best. I look forward to seeing it mature into a adult tree. Definitely ordering from them again.
