Morus alba x rubra 'Early Bird'

Early Bird is the earliest ripening of the all mulberry varieties!

Starting in early summer, this tree bears an abundance of sweet, dark, highly-flavored fruit, 1-1/2 inches long x 1/2 inch wide that look like elongated blackberries, and have a delicious and distinctive sweet taste. The berries start to ripen as early as June here in the Pacific Northwest, possibly earlier in warmer climates!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I just purchased one I live in Stanfield Oregon and was wondering if it will survive the winter temperatures outside. It’s about 4’ tall and I have it outside but in a 5 gallon pot. Just got it this summer and the weather is starting to change. So was wondering if I should take it in or just leave it in the the pit outside. Then transfer it to the ground next spring. Just wondering what to do thanks.

That pot is way too small for the tree at it's current size. If you want it to survive the winter you will need to plant it in-ground, or in a much larger container, and apply mulch to insulate the roots.

  • New tree. I planted two mulberry trees. 4 feet tall. How many years will it take to produce berries?

They should start to produce next year if the establish well. Remember they need more water than you think they do to grow quickly.

  • I have purchased an Early Bird Mulberry tree and an Illinois Everbearing Mulberry tree. How far apart should I plant these trees from each other?

It depends on how you manage them as they will both become quite tall and wide if they are not kept pruned down. Naturally they would need to be set on 16 foot centers, but if managed you can plant them closer together.
