Morus alba x rubra 'Early Bird'

Early Bird is the earliest ripening of the all mulberry varieties! Starting in early summer, this tree bears an abundance of sweet, dark, highly-flavored fruit, 1-1/2 inches long x 1/2 inch wide that look like elongated blackberries, and have a delicious and distinctive sweet taste. The berries start to ripen as early as June here in the Pacific Northwest, possibly earlier in warmer climates!

Offer consistent water during first two years of establishment. Somewhat drought tolerant as a mature tree.

Great purchase

I purchased one of these from you last spring, I neglected in its tiny pot (that it was sent in) for a month or so and eventually planted it out behind the shop on my property. I watered it with chicken water I was changing out every few days over the summer. It has probably at least quadrupled in size. This tree was selected for fast growing shade and aerial protection for my chicken run. Though my chickens are free range. I'm looking forward to seeing how well it does this year!

Barely alive and the young plant is not tolerant of 38-degree nights.

My 1-gallon potted tree was a thin little stick with very minimal budding present. After planting in the ground, a couple of buds opened but a night with 38 degree temperatures killed those off. After several weeks, a couple of new buds reformed and started to open, but another 38 degree night killed those off as well. I don't think this one is going to make it. Apparently recommended for Zone 5 but I would not recommend planting before June in Colorado. The young plant needs more ideal conditions to get started. By contrast, my Illinois Ever-Bearing was planted the same day. It was healthier from the start and while it didn't like the 38-degree nights it has bounced back very well each time. It looks like a winner.
