Elephant Heart Asian Plum
Prunus salicina 'Elephant Heart'
Elephant heart plums are bigger than most plums and usually measure 7-8cm across. The shape is oblong with rounded shoulders that taper to a point - almost heart-like! The skin is velvety, mottled yellow and ripens to purple-red. The flesh is firm, crisp and juicy - and the color varies from ruby red to golden. A fibrous pit sits at the center of the flesh, not firmly attached. Their flavor's tart, intensely sweet and floral - with hints of vanilla and berries. Luther Burbank really hit the jackpot with this one!
These plums can grow in most US zones and need only 500-600 chill hours. They do ripen late, especially for an Asian plum, so best grown in areas with longer, hotter summers.
