Malus domestica 'Ellison's Orange'

Still a favorite of English organic growers because of its outstanding flavor, heavy cropping and resistance to scab. The sweet/tart, anise-like, crisp, juicy and aromatic flavor make it a great choice for the organic orchard. Bred as a Cox's Orange Pippin X Calville Blanc in Lincolnshire, England about 1904. It has a soft orange background with unusual red stripes.

Somewhat prone to biennial bearing; thin early heavy crops completely to avoid the subsequent exhaustion this tree can experience. A little extra care goes a long way! Ripens early-midseason.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I am looking for a dwarf apple tree that will pollinate with your honeycrisp. I prefer sweet apples. Any suggestions?

The Ellison's Orange Apple is in Bloom Group is in Bloom Group 4 and will pollinate the Honeycrisp. It is a delicious and beautiful apple. A great choice!

  • Description states to thin early heavy crops completely to avoid exhaustion. Can you give further information? Early in the season, early in the growing life of the tree?

Early in the life of the tree, the first 3-5 years after planting, heavy cropping will damage the ability for the root system to establish and "runt out" the plant. Aggressive thinning is suggested to get the most out of your tree over it's lifespan. As the tree gets older you can thin less aggressively, but to maintain consistent crops annual thinning is still suggested.

  • What is the Blooming Time ?

This apple is a bloom group 4 - check out our Apple Growing Guide for more information on apple tree pollination and a bloom time chart!

Georgeous tree

The tree was sent to me in the perfect state of just-about-to-come-alive dormancy. A beautiful, healthy-looking tree with lots of viable branches to choose from as I pruned. Obviously it will take a few years to know how it does in my backyard garden, but I'm very pleased with what they sent me.

Tree arrived in excellent shape, very well wrapped with lots of roots. I put it immediately in the ground after 30 minutes in water and today it looks very happy!

Great tree

Very vigorous tree, produced a bumper crop in the second year. A note about Ellisons. Right off the tree, they are amazing, really the best apple I've tasted. Shortly after picking, they develop an aniseed taste that becomes medicine-like after about 3 days, so they do not store well.
