Prunus cerasus 'Morello'

Morello cherries have a deep crimson flesh and rich, wine-red juice. English Morello is an old variety, grown for centuries. It has tart, aromatic flesh. The juice is abundant and excellent for cooking and pie making.

The large heart-shaped, dark red fruit is freestone and ripens in August, at the end of the cherry season. The tree habit is small; easily maintained at 8 feet or less. Also low chill - between 400 and 500 hours will guarantee good bloom and fruit set.

I planted my dream tree

After receiving my Morello cherry tree, professionally wrapped and packed, I found the right place for it in our back yard in location where it will enjoy full sunshine at least 10 hours a day. The buds are getting fatter and fatter every day and I can expect the leaves to appear out very soon. It is my dream tree, because in my home country Hungary from age 4 to 12 I spent an awful lot of time in our Morello cherry tree nibbling and harvesting. The tree never got any disease and the tart cherries of it were delicious and always plentiful. We eat them just raw or in pies or as refreshment drinks, and my mother even made delicious Morello cherry wine too which we were allowed to sample when we had guests at the family table. I look forward to reenacting the good times in a few years, although 70 years from this lovely tree and 5550 miles from my birthplace away.

Very nice shaped, healthy tree. To be honest, it is nicer looking than ones I've seen at our local nurseries which were much more expensive.
