Prunus x 'Flavor Grenade'

Enjoy explosive, sweet-as-honey flavor! This green fruit with a red blush hangs on the tree and can be eaten for four to six weeks as it keeps getting sweeter. It extends the stone fruit season and can be harvested into October. when it will still have a distinctive crunch.

This variety is showing promise as one that may ripen successfully in some of the cooler summer regions (in some years) - so if you want to "push the zone" and experiment in your short or cooler summer region, Flavor Grenade is a great variety to choose. Chill hours 200.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Hi. Can Emerald Beaut or Superior Asian Plum pollinate this tree?

Probably yes, but your mileage will vary depending on your environment.

  • Will sweet treat pluerry pollinate the flavor grenade pluot

Probably not. We suggest an Asian plum, like Beauty or Santa Rosa (depending on your area) to use as a universal pollinator for your pluots and pluerry trees.

  • Will TLOR-TSIRAN APRICOT pollinate FLAVOR GRENADE PLUOT?

Probably not. Tlor-Tsiran is mostly apricot and pollinates with other apricots. Flavor Grenade is mostly Asian plum and pollinates with other Asian plums.

  • Is the plum “Flavor Grenade” suitable for western Washington? Are “Shiro” or “Beauty” suitable pollenizers? When will this tree ship? Also is the root stock prone to suckering?

Flavor Grenade will have a hard time ripening outside of a greenhouse in Western WA. It does fine in Eastern WA. Beauty is an acceptable pollenizer, and Santa Rosa is best. The rootstock should not sucker if the graft is growing well and the plant is not under stress.

Flavor Grenade has arrived.

Another beautiful bare root tree from raintree. The tree is already blooming. It looks great so far!

Best tasting fruit!

I bought the tree in 2018. It’s doing great in zone 5. I bought a dapple dandy too at the same time and in 2020 it suddenly dried up and died in summer. The flavor grenade has plenty flowers and is very showy in spring. I have had tree covered in flowers from 2021. Last year I had couple of fruits but they had plum curculio and squirrels took one. This year there were lots of fruits early on but most dropped because of plum curculio I think. I bagged 10 or so with organza bags at the right time and they are the only ones which ripened out of 200 or so flowers. I ate 1 in mid August and it was ok felt a bit raw. I ate few in early Sep and they were good and crunchy and sweet. I ate my last one on Sep 20. It was almost red all around with blushes of green and came off with a gentle tug. That was the most spectacular fruit I have ever eaten. So sweet and juicy and crunchy!
