Forest Flame Pieris
Pieris japonica 'Forest Flame'
The Forest Flame Pieris is a compact and slow-growing shrub with an upright form, reaching 4-7 feet in height and width. In early spring, it produces drooping clusters of delicate white flowers, reminiscent of lily-of-the-valley. The new leaves emerge in a striking flame red color, gradually fading to a creamy pink before maturing into a glossy dark green for the summer. While the seed capsules that follow the flowers can add winter interest, it is recommended to prune them off after blooming. The shrub also boasts hanging clusters of small pink buds that appear in late summer and provide a lovely contrast against the evergreen foliage.
