Fred Gravenstein Apple

I planted five mini dwarf Gravensteins in my front yard this March... and as I write this (on the last day of May), all five have bloomed and apples are beginning to develop. I didn't expect fruit for a couple of years, so I am super pleased at their progress. Picture is of one of perhaps half a dozen groups of developing fruit on one of the trees.

Fred was the first tree I planted here after moving from Washington to NW Oregon 5 years ago. It produced a nice crop of apples last year. This spring it was dead. Dug it out and the root had rotted. My other 3 apples we had planted in raised wooden -planters because of the clay. I am very sad about Fred. I dearly love Gravenstein apples and grew up with a big old tree of them in my yard.
