Passiflora edulis 'Frederick'

Frederick is the premier-fruit producing passiflora!  The flowers are fragrant and large. The fruit has a dark purple skin and delicious pulp when ripe. The fruit should never be picked; it must fall from the vine naturally. If it is allowed to wrinkle a bit after collecting, it becomes sweet ambrosia. This outstanding Patrick Pons-Worley hybrid is vigorous and blooms from late spring until fall. Restrict root growth to encourage flowering and fruiting.

If you don't live in USDA Zones 9-11, grow it in a sunny window or greenhouse. It thrives and produces, often the first year, in a pot. This plant is excellent for a sunny location and makes a good, rapidly growing screen for a fence or outbuilding.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Will this passion fruit survive in an unheated greenhouse in zone 8b? I’m in Eugene Oregon.

Likely yes! Some people even grow it outdoors as a tender perennial (that dies back annually). It is unlikely to ripen fruit however as it needs a longer growing season.

  • How big of a container should it be in?

The bigger the better as passiflora require a lot of soil fertility and larger pots will provide that longer. 10 gallons minium, but a larger half barrel planter is best.

  • Can this survive zone 7 if overwintered in a greenhouse kept at 37 degrees?

If your greenhouse kept at those temperatures consistently yes
