Genie Magnolia
Magnolia soulangeana×lilliflora 'Genie'
This elegant, pyramidal tree is the ideal choice for brightening a smaller garden with its beautiful deep maroon-purple buds and blooms. The lightly scented, tulip-shaped flowers bloom on bare, upright branches in early spring and continue until early summer, while a smaller late summer bloom can also be expected if soils stay regularly moist. Released in 2008 from Waitara, New Zealand breeder Vance Hooper.
For best results, plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil and keep watered to encourage repeat blooms throughout summer. Unlike other saucer magnolias, 'Genie's blooms are more resistant to cold weather, tolerating temps down to 37F.
