Actinidia arguta 'Michigan State'

A selection with exceptionally large, sweet, elongated fruit; twice the size of Annanasnaja! Spend less time picking and more time eating. Jumbo is a very productive and flavorful variety, also known as 'Michigan State' or 'MSU' hardy kiwi.

These fast-growing, beautiful vines produce clusters of oblong kiwi fruits the size of large grapes. Lacking the rough "fuzzy" kiwi skin, these smooth fruits can be eaten whole, like bunches of kiwi-flavored seedless grapes. Originally brought to this country as an ornamental, the green fruit is similar to the fuzzy kiwi in flavor, though sweeter and easier to eat. The smooth-textured vines are very vigorous and need a strong support. Training a fruiting female vine up the legs or railings of a deck, or along an unattractive chain link fence, can create a great tropical effect and be uniquely easy to harvest! Have a hardy arguta or an early-blooming fuzzy deliciosa male for pollination, and allow 3-5 years to begin flowering and fruiting.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • How big is "exceptionally large"?

About the size of a 9 volt battery, maybe slightly larger. That is roughly 2-3 times the size of other varieties.

  • If I order 2 MSU hardy kiwi plants, can you guarantee there will be one female and one male plant?

Both plants will be female. Our male hardy kiwis are sold as "male hardy kiwi" and you will need one for every 8 female plants.

  • Does it require a second kiwi tree to produce fruit?

It will require a male kiwi, which we sell as "male hardy kiwi" for pollination.

  • Will 2x2 wood members keep their shape supporting this vine, or will the vines twist the 2x2s?

They will definately twist the 2x2s. Easily.

  • Can you prune the kiwi vines each year to keep it smaller than 40 feet long, to fit your trellis? Or will doing that hurt the health or productivity?

Yes you can keep the main vines shorter as it is the secondary vines that produce fruit. Kiwi should be pruned annually, or even twice annually.

Beautiful Kiwi Plant

Arrived April 18th, 2024 in beautiful condition, a little ahead of the kiwi I already have planted, but should do wonderfully. Well packaged, along with three sweet cherry trees. Giving it a good soak, then will plant later this afternoon. Thank you, Raintree!

Hardy Kiwi

Plants arrived in excellent condition.

In Iowa, will be several weeks before they leaf out, but I am confident they will.

Jumbo hardy kiwi

I have ordered from numerous online nurseries in the past and Raintree has excelled above all others. It is the only nursery I order from and recommend all my friends to order from. The plants are well packed and the bare roots have plenty of roots and have a very high survival rate compared to all other plants I have ordered from other nurseries. My kiwi plants I ordered last year are all surviving and thriving well. Unfortunately this year s kiwi is facing some challenges likely due to postal delays in delivery. I will take good care of it and hope for a recovery. I am enjoying many of the fruits and edible bushes and plants I have ordered from Raintree over the years.

Raintree Nursery

They have the best mail order plants in the business in my opinion. They are always packaged and protected correctly and have plenty of roots to ensure the survival of the plant. I have regretted ordering from places other than RainTree Nursery.

Showed up with leaves all damaged

Not sure if it was the shipping Weather, but when I open the box all the leaves were damaged and wilted. I am planting it anyway because maybe it will come around. Kiwis are pretty hard to kill off I guess.
