Kanko Bai Flowering Apricot
Prunus mume 'Kanko Bai'
This superior variety is prized for its profuse, beautiful, deep magenta, double petal blooms, red-tinted foliage, and orange-red fruit. A particularly ornamental selection, it blooms in late winter and produces tart, apricot-like fruit which make excellent umeboshi (Japanese pickled plum). Blooming in some regions when snow is still on the ground, it has become a symbol of hope through adversity.
A self fertile, small, long-lived tree which needs full sun. Will produce much more fruit with a pollinizer of a different variety. Also a great forage tree for early pollinators! One gallon pot.
