Zizyphus jujuba 'Li'

One of the few self-fruitful jujubes available in the US! Li offers medium-sized, gorgeous mahogany brown fruits. The fruits average 1" tall, with a stout, barrel shape and a very mild flavor when fresh. Dried, they are sweet and great for use in teas and preserves. Ripens mid-season, and fruit quality increases as the tree matures. Li is somewhat less thorny than many other varieties.

Jujubes are pretty trees with glossy green leaves that turn yellow in the autumn. Called ā€œChinese Dateā€, the fruit is very sweet, reddish brown when ripe, with a single seed. These thorny, grafted trees will grow to 20’ or more but can be maintained much smaller. They are very productive and start producing fruit quickly. The fruit needs hot summers to ripen well. In cooler summers pick it half brown and half green and bring it inside to finish ripening. The myth of Zizyphus is that they are all tender subtropicals, but jujubes are hardy down to zone 6.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Do you think this tree could be espaliered?

Yes, they can be trellised and usually are in commerical culitvation.

  • Can I grow this tree in zone 5? Other websites indicates this type of tree can grow zone 5-10.

You can, but you might run into issues in colder years with the fruit actually ripening depending on how hot your summers get.

  • Can this plant cross pollinate?

    Yes, with other jujube varieties.

  • How many fruits does this plant have by itself??

Your mileage may vary depending on seasonal conditions, but it does fruit on it's own. It fruits more with other jujube varieties to cross pollinate with.

  • Mine is more than 20 feet and flowers densely but rarely fruits with one or 2. Wats wrong with it?? Or is it anything i m missing to care for it?? I live in CA. Any suggestions welcome pls

Self fertility in plants is almost always partial and varies from region to region. Growing another variety of jujube will increase yields significantly.

  • How big does the semi-dwarf tree get?

Mature size is roughly 18' tall.

  • Are jujube li trees grafted or not ?

    They are all grafted yes.

I my Li on 9APR and planted it the next day,

I my Li on 9APR and planted it the next day, after the prescribed soak I checked it this morning, and there is no sign that is is starting to bud. I scratched the bark near the top and it showed bright green. Can I expect it to show signs of life soon?.

Easy to grow

I received the tree in excellent condition. We planted it following Raintree's instructions. The tree has been growing well even during the extremely hot day of this summer in West Texas. I'd definitely recommend Raintree without reservations.

Healed it in raised bed 2 months before planting

Took a long time before we both agreed where to plant. Meantime, it did great laying at an angle in my raised bed. 1.5 months after planting, it's doing great! Much better than a JuJu I bought from another nursery (which died). Raintree has been fantastic so far, and gives me healthy, viable plants. I've made so many orders!

Abysmal

Tree arrived topped, without any roots, and didn't come out of dormancy. Customer service is hard to contact and is extremely slow in responding 1 month. 2/3 products I purchased were half dead from freezing. I bought some from willis orchards and fast growing trees instead and was very happy with them. I would strongly suggest not giving business to Raintree.

I ordered a Lang and a Li jujube, but only the Lang was delivered. You email server is out, so I will think positive thoughts and continue to wait to hear good news, please send me the Li jujube that I paid for.

Optimistic

Received jujube with one small root on one and two small roots on the other. I have purchased thousands of plants. These are the smallest root systems i have ever observed on new plants. I will give them the personal touch.

early still but...

It is early still, the tree has yet to leaf out, but it was shipped well, and arrived without being damaged in a bare root state. It was a nice looking tree, with good height and girth, not a sad little stick. Once the weather warms up a little more I will know whether it comes out of dormancy and grows well. I was happy to find this jujube variety, I had a Lang Jujube from another company and needed a second variety for best pollination. Thumbs up so far.
