Diospyros virginiana 'Meader'

Prohibited to CA

The only available American variety that is reliably self-fertile. It was developed by noted fruit breeder Elwyn Meader of New Hampshire. Luscious and rich fruits when they ripen on the tree after the first few frosts, these orange globes hang long after the showy fall leaves drop. Beautiful and tasty!

It is upright growing, very cold hardy, and is among the first to ripen, doing well even in areas with cool summers.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Is the mature height actually 15’? I thought American persimmons grew closer to 30’-50’.

    On this rootstock yes

  • When is the best time of year to plant this persimmon tree?

Spring or fall is always best for bare root plants.

  • Is it astringent?

If eaten before it is fully ripe, yes it is astringent

  • We bought a Meader Persimmon a few years ago from you. This year it bloomed and produced fruit for the first time. They have ripened and are soft now, but they have black sections in them. Is that normal for them? They don't appear to be seeds, just sections of fruit that are distinctly black.

Yes, that is a normal part of the bletting process. The fruit is ripening to a point of fermentation, which causes the discoloration.

  • will it survive in zone 5a ?

Likely yes, American persimmon are very cold hardy.

  • Would it do well in Western WA and Eastern WA?

Yes, should do well in both areas.

bad luck?

This spring I bought a 6" grafted meader. For the first weeks it seemed to grow beautifully. It put out leaves. To my surprise, it also put out four flowers on five of its buds. The flowers quickly fell off and the seedling seemed to be dying. The tree did not grow any small branch and is sticking out of the ground as was 6" and after a few months it remained the same. No growth at all. Probably bad grafting material. I wasted a whole year and I'm sad to admit that I'm not young either.

:(

The tiny stick broke off and I planted the black roots, but nothing new has come up. Was this year a hard one at Raintree. Everything else I have from previous years grew really well.
