Ribes nigrum 'Minaj Smyriou'

BLACK CURRANTS ARE PROHIBITED TO DE, ME, NC, NJ, WV, VA, MI, MA & RI. Rust resistant varieties may be shipped to OH & MI (with permit)

This new, self fertile introduction from Bulgaria is a heavy producer of rich and tasty black currants on a manageable-sized bush. This variety is resistant to white pine blister rust and will be the best choice in most of the nation where white pines are grown.

Black currants have outstanding health benefits, including high Vitamin C content, up to 5 times that of oranges by weight. They have twice the potassium of bananas and twice the antioxidants of blueberries. The antioxidants, essential fatty acids and potassium in black currants have anti-inflammatory impact, reducing the effects of arthritis. Its antioxidant action has been shown to help prevent cancer. The strong flavor of Black Currants is highly prized in Europe, even fresh, but most Americans prefer them made into jam, syrup or dried as raisins. Partially self fertile plants produce best with another variety of R. nigrum for cross-pollinization. Bushes will grow to 4-5’ tall. We offer well rooted 1-year bushes.  Hardy USDA zone 4-9

More like a gooseberry than my others

This is my preferred fresh eating black (also have blackdown and black september) it's the least musky and crisper and sweet tart, sort of gooseberry like. Blackdown out produced it last year but this year was close (third or fourth year in ground).

Leafing out!

When I received the bare root, it had already started getting leaves, so I was hoping it would not get shocked when planted. The leaves are continuing to open and grow, so it looks good!

DOA currant plant

I had bought two currant plants from here. My Ben Moore is doing great, but my minaj showed up dead. But I wanted to give it a chance in case it was dormant( unfortunately that was not the case)

dead on arrival?

hi raintree it seems the minaj black currant didn't survive the trek from your nursery. Everything else ordered is doing fine. Could you please send me a replacement? Thankyou, Maryann Barb
