Prunus avium 'Nugent'

Clear, sunny yellow cherries are a rare treat, and Nugent is good as gold! Non-staining juice and less attractive to birds, it makes a great pollination partner for all other sweet cherries (except Van) due to its mid-season bloom period.  It ripens mid-to-late season, is productive and has an excellent, sweet, low-acid flavor. Developed at Cornell University, where it was known as NY 518; it's a particularly good choice for cold weather regions.

Disease resistant and widely adapted, Nugent resists bacterial canker and rain-induced cracking. Tree form is unusually broad, with wide crotch angles and almost drooping mature branching.

"Nugent" sweet cherry in South-East PA, zone 7A.

I planted "Nugent" cherry in 2021. It grows vigorously but bloomed little (just few flowers) until this season, 2024. This time the number of blossoms was much higher than before and approximately up to 50 cherries were set. As advertised in the description of variety, yellow color of ripe/ripening fruits does not attract birds or squirrels, so no need to set-up protection. Ants, however, are able to detect (likely smell) the sweetness of ripe cherries and try to get them part... Cherries are of medium size, sweet, with nice flavor, which is quite unique for yellow cherries (reminds me those ancient yellow cherries which I had a chance to try in my grandparent's homestead when I was a child). Disease resistance of the tree is high, as advertised. Bacterial canker pressure is strong in my area and attacks all stone-fruit trees but the "Nugent" cherry fights back.

Nicely pack

My tree came in a sturdy cardboard box, wrapped in moist dirt with plastic around the bottom roots. It is in the ground and so far all looks good. It is leafing out right now
