Rubus x loganobaccus ‘Phenomenal’ x leucodermis

Once so popular that the Seattle Times called it “the most outstanding berry of the Northwest”, this large, blackberry-family fruit was developed in the 1920s on Vashon Island. WWII and a death in the family took a toll on the growers, and the Olympic faded into relative obscurity, but Raintree has brought it back for its exquisite flavor, described as “a startling sweetness, an almost buttery richness and just the necessary slight hint of tang”. A productive cultivar, it was a cross between Luther Burbank's novel Phenominal berry (a blackberry/raspberry cross), and our PNW native blackcap raspberry.

Olympic berry is a trailing variety with thorny canes, fruiting on the previous year's growth. To Zone 7 or possibly colder.

Size: 4" Pot

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Curious about the origin of the name. Any clues?

The Olympic berry originated on Vashon Island in the 1920s as a cross between the Phenomenal berry and the wild blackcap raspberry. The originator was Peter Erickson, a Vashon farmer who befriended Burbank at the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.

  • Are these thornless?

    No, they are not thornless

  • I have been looking for any plants for years. Is there an estimated season this will be available again?

We should have more later in the season. Use the Notify Me When Available button to get an email when they are back in stock.

  • How large is the plant's spread?

As with all blackberries it is crown forming and without support will tip layer to spread in the surrounding area. With a trellis the crown takes up very little space, but grows wider with time.

  • What is the best care for Olympic Berries? How long is the season & where can I buy them if you are sold out?

Olympic berries are rare and currently are being reintroduced as plants for home growers. They grow like blackberries and have the same general needs.

Splendidly tangy-sweet!

Plentiful plump berries, an astonishing nearly 2-inches in length; supple and tangy with a sweet aftertaste. Will be perfect for baking! Fast growth, especially on the second year (blackberries are basically a weed in the PNW, so to be expected 😁). Highly recommend!

Rich Flavor

Doing a potted culture. Not quite as vigorous as a marionberry, but their flavor is even richer.
