Crataegus pinnatifida 'Red Sun'

Red Sun is prized for its unique oak-leaf like foliage and large, tasty fruit. Know in China as Shan Zha, this attractive, small tree displays large clusters of white flowers followed by abundant, round, 1" diameter fruit which turn red when ripe. This unique sweet and flavorful fruit is delicious eaten fresh, dried, stewed, and made into candy.

Chinese Haw is relatively easy to grow, disease resistant, and hardy once well-established. Does not tolerate drought well as a young tree. Mature height to about 15' tall.

    July 1st was the start date and they are already at limit, there will be a few more released at the end of January

  • Do you ship Chinese Hawthorn bareroot to Vancouver Canada?

    We do not ship to Canada at all.

  • What is the canopy diameter when mature? I'd like to make sure it's planted far enough out from a carport roof.

    At full maturity about 15 feet wide.

  • Is RED SUN CHINESE HAWTHORN deer-resistant?

    No, there are no plants are genuinely deer resistant. If deer are a problem you will need to use other proven exclusion measures.

  • What’s the difference between the red sun Chinese hawthorn and the BIG GOLDEN STAR HAWTHORN? Thanks!

    Big Star has bigger fruit and fewer thorns. It is related to the Red Sun, but improved. Some customers prefer Red Sun however as it is traditional.

Healthy tree, but can it survive the TX heat is yet to be seen.

This is the second time that I am buying this tree. I live in zone 8b, and I bought one last year, but July heat and the west sun killed it even though I watered well. I am trying again, and for the last time. After discussing with Laura, the RainTree Horticulturist, via email, I have planted it where it will receive the most afternoon shade (shade is relative since I don't have much shading around my house, and the house will be used as shade as the summer sun cast the shade onto that spot around 3-4 pm). Back to the topic as far as the tree itself, it came about 4 1/2 feet tall with large bare roots and the buds protruding already. Within a week of planting, buds came out. The tree came on 3/18 and I took the below pictures on 4/6. I did pinch off the lower buds as I want it to grow like a tree.

Red Sun Chinese Hawthorn

The tree arrived in very good condition with the whole root system. We planted it in our front yard successfully. It is growing very fast! This is the best tree we ever got in the past ten years. We will order trees from this nursery in the future.
