Fragaria vesca 'Reine des Vallees'

Grown in Europe by commercial and home growers, this is the primary cultivar grown by commercial exporters of alpine strawberries, also known as fraises des bois. The strong, vigorous plants are clumping, with few to no runners, and day-neutral, producing good crops of fruit throughout the summer and into fall. The long, narrow, aromatic red fruits are full of flavor and sweet - a real treat!

Unusually cold-hardy and great for growers all over the US! Will produce in sun to shade; afternoon shade is recommended for growers in warmer summer regions. Sold in a 4" pot.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Do they run?

It's more like "walk" than "run", but yes they spread in shady areas.

  • When you say these plants have few to no runners, what do you mean by "few". Bought some "fraises des bois" last year (not from you) and had to rip them out as they put out runners everywhere. I am looking for the true fraises des bois which are a mounded plant and do not run. Is "Reine des Vallees" such a plant?

Yes, these are one of many culitvars of French "fraises des bois" strawberries. This cultivar produces very few stolens (runners), but I can't say if it is the "true fraises des bois" you are refering to.

  • I live in Zone 10B. Is it viable in this zone?

Probably not, they do not love too much heat even in the shade.

Makes large alpines compared to other varieties! Very nice, soft and sweet berries. I wouldn’t say it’s the most intensely fragrant—I find Rugen and Regina in my garden to be making the most flavorful. But these are great plants that are blooming and growing very well for me with the other alpines I ordered and planted it with! Very happy. Reliable and safe shipping. Thank you!

Already blooming strawberry plants

The plants arrived in excellent condition. Infact, they were already setting fruit! Wonderful purchase, I highly recommend Raintree Nursery.

Mostly Dead

All three of the plants arrived with several dead leaves. I bought them to plant outside, but I couldn’t get to it so I kept them indoors. Two of the plants are now dead with just one hanging on. Wish I had taken a picture when they first arrived.
