Zanthoxylum simulans

The highly fragrant seeds and leaves are used in Chinese cooking. This shrub (which sports large, fat thorns) grows to up 10' or larger and is hardy to -10 F. Most cooks prefer grinding and using the exterior husk of the seed, as the black seeds themselves can be quite bitter.

While production is said to benefit from having a male and female plants, almost all plants produce both fruit and seeds.

Easy to grow!

I planted mine around 6 months ago on the West shore of a seasonal pond we have. It seemed happy and did some good growing, and even produced a tiny crop of around 20 peppercorns in its very first fall. The deer roam the area extensively but have left it alone so far. The leaves also smell lovely. I have it on my drip irrigation system but other than one or two weedings I have mostly let it do its own thing.

Starting next year I expect to have all the peppercorns I need -- a little goes a long way!

Awesome Shrub/Tree!

The plants arrived in a very well packed boxes. I ordered 3 of these a couple years ago and they have already quadrupled in size and started producing peppercorns. They are hardy and have held up well to cold snaps, so I decided to buy 4 more. Hoping to prune them all into small trees.

SECHUAN PEPPER

This little guy is doing well. I'm very intrigued with growing my own pepper plant! I'm tickled by it's large thorns. Respect!

Great plant

The plant arrived in a very well packed box. It was in good condition, bigger than I expected.

After taken it out of the box and placed by the window, it has been thriving: green leaves start growing, small branches begin forming and the tinny little peppers are appearing as well. I am very happy with the purchase. Thank you rain-tree nursery!
