Pyrus communis 'Spalding'

If you like the crunchy, juicy, sweetness of an Asian pear and the mellow complex flavor of a European pear, you will love Spalding. A healthy, vigorous tree produces loads of medium size, round, light green fruit in early September. Originally from the South, it thrives in the Pacific Northwest - and even gardeners into Florida grow it!

This European pear is partially self fertile and fireblight resistant. Also considered low-chill, needing only 150 hours to reliably bloom and set fruit.

Hardy to USDA Zone: 5

Mature Height:  15' (Semi Dwarf)

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: September

Pollination: Partially Self Fertile, better production with pollination

Semi-Dwarf Rootstock: OHxF87

Size: Semi-Dwarf (4'-5')

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Will an Ayer pear pollinate a spalding?

Typically not. They bloom too far apart. For more information please check out our European Pear Growing Guide for a bloom chart.

Spalding Pear

Planted the first one in 2005. It has been a regular bearer near Austin TX, so does well in the hot. Planted a second in 2018 and it just started bearing the last couple of years. Between the two got near 40 gallons of pears last year (really should have thinned out the big one). Not quite sure what is pollinating it though. Possibly the Ubileen pear that has never had fruit of its own, or maybe one of the neighbor's trees?

Excited about this pear

Tree has a great shape with multiple branches. Took a while to leaf out but is making up for lost time.

Wonderful company, but one area could improve

My tree arrived well-packed and healthy, but the root system was sparse. I gave it a lot of TLC, and it is now well-leafed, but I can't help but believe that if it had been shipped with a more extensive root system, it would be doing better than it is.
