Prunus persica var. nucipersica x 'Spice Zee'

Spice Zee is the first member of the NectaPlum™ family of fruits. NectaPlum™ is a novel catagory of interspecific cultivars, developed by the late, great breeding genius Floyd Zaiger, that is approximately 1/2 nectarine, 1/4 peach and 1/4 Asian plum. It truly tastes like a delicious cross between a plum and a nectarine, getting rave reviews wherever it is grown. Spice Zee is a great choice for the home gardener, with freestone fruit offering a deep, complex aroma and flavor -  pleasantly tangy, yet loaded with sugar. It's also a beautiful ornamental addition to your landscape with a tremendous purplish-pink spring bloom followed by dark RED leaves in the spring that mature to a rich green-red in late summer.

This variety is self-fruitful, very productive, and low chill - needing only 200-300 hours to bloom successfully. Not likely to fully ripen in cool summer areas. US Patent 13503.

Cold Hardy to USDA Zone: 6

Mature Height: 12'

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Is this a freestone fruit?

Yes, Spice Zee is considered a freestone fruit.

  • I had an issue of curly leaves on SpiceZee last year. How do I deal with it. Thank you

I highly recommend doing research on Leaf Curl. Our Peach Growing Guide goes over this common issue and methods for management.

  • What is the difference between 10" sleeve and semi-dwarf?

The plant in the 10 inch sleeve is younger and smaller than the 4'-5' bare root whip previously available.

  • Does the Spice Zee Nectaplum have any particular disease resistance?

No, like many complex cross hybrids these trees are not bred for disease resistance.

Robust & Beautiful

This is a incredibly beautiful and robust tree. I'm in 8b in Oregon's Willamette Valley. This tree is in her second year, and I probably got 50+ beautiful, sweet fruits off of it! It also has tremendous ornamental value. Wish I had a second.

I did have some peach leaf curl, as happens with most of my stone fruit in this climate. Using a copper spray and following with garlic oil has helped a lot

Arrived near death

I tried for several weeks to revive this plant but ultimately it along with two other trees died. Of course that was just over 30 days ago so no refund or replacement is available.

These start out weird and become wonderful.

This is one of my favorite trees, and certainly produce five-star fruits, but they don't come without challenges. The first one I planted, a few years ago, grew up into a gorgeous tree, but started rough. It looked good coming out of the box, looked fine after planting, but the top of the tree just didn't wake up. I cut the tree back to about 6 inches of scion, where there were baby red leaves coming out of the stem. It seemed like a big setback, but I grew a gorgeous, open-center tree from that little bit of scion, and the tree fruited beautifully. A few seasons later, I accidentally allowed peach tree borers to kill the tree. I ordered another tree and I will manage the borers aggressively. Like the last time, this new bare-root tree looked amazing coming out of the box. It had perfect scaffold branches and seemed primed to do well. And yet again, the top didn't wake up. I have gorgeous red leaves coming out about 10 inches up the trunk, and I've pruned back to that point, again. It's crazy that this keeps happening, but I'll grow a gorgeous tree anyway, and I look forward to the delectable fruit!

Purple passion

I live in NC and so far I have had great luck with this company. I love that their products are superior to other contenders and that they give special care to pack and deliver an almost guaranteed survivor.
My Nectaplum arrived well packaged with a couple of others. Roots were packed tight and firmly secured. All 3 of my products were already budding. Root system was sound. Nice root system! I am enclosing a pic of the tree only being in the ground a few days.

Keep selling and buying quality products.

After one year it's already fruiting.

This is such an amazing fruit tree. With a bit of good fertilizer, sun and decent drainage I got this tree around may 2023 and not even a year later April 2024 it's already producing small fruits that will be ready to harvest in August/Sept! Crazy fast and beautiful dark purple leaves 😍. Will keep and maintain this nectaplum for years and years to come.

Vigorous grower on Viking root-stock.

Having tasted nectaplum in California I purchased this tree in 10" sleeve to see if it can survive PLC in PNW with minimal spray protocol. Received the tree well packaged without any damaged, planted it in a 15 gallon pot on 7/28 (see Picture 1). This tree has grown like weed in just 2 months (Picture 2), I had read Viking root stock was vigorous its amazing to see its capability. I see a few fruit buds and hoping it will set one or two fruit next year. Minus one star for poor communication and 2 weeks delay in shipping this tree out (excluding one week when it was hot and not conducible for shipping young trees).

Beautiful tree

Bare root tree arrived on time and in great shape. Within a week it was showing life, including some flower buds. I'm very impressed!

Quality tree

I topped it at 3ft to to start the vase shape I'm looking for with a lower canopy but even as is, it was very well shaped.

Can't wait for the fruit but it will be a couple of years.
