Arbutus x ‘Marina’

Arbutus 'Marina' impresses with its ever-changing look over the seasons. Flaking reddish-brown bark reveals cinnamon-colored layers. Proper pruning enhances this attractive feature. Pendulous clusters of pinkish-white, urn-shaped flowers appear in late summer and into fall, transforming to large, strawberry-like fruit that is yellow then reddens. Often in flower and fruit at the same time, this tree debuted at the European Horticultural Exposition of 1917 and was reintroduced in 1984 by the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation. It is believed to have been brought from a tree in Victor Reiter's yard, the cutting originating from a tree planted in San Francisco in the early 1900s.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I'm up north in Kent, WA, in climate zone 4-5. I've got a spot that's sunny in the afternoon where there used to be a couple of vine maples that I'm looking to replace. I need a shade tolerant tree, and my Sunset New Western Garden Book says that the Arbutus unedo, or strawberry tree, tolerates the shade. Will this marina strawberry tree tolerate the shade, or no?

    Yes it should do fine.

  • Is the fruit edible? If so, what is it like?

The fruit’s flesh is soft and golden-orange, encasing many small seeds giving the flesh a gritty, sandy, and mealy consistency. Strawberry tree fruits emit a faint aroma reminiscent of anise and have a subtly fruity, sweet-tart, and woody flavor with mango, apricot, guava, and peach nuances. The fruits are not commonly consumed fresh due to their gritty texture and muted flavor, but they are incorporated into sauces, jams, and jellies.

  • What zones?

    Hardy to USDA Zone 7

  • How long does it take to fruit Marina strawberry tree?

Typically within 2-3 years from transplanting.
