Malus domestica 'AK-98'

Tangy Green™ has a crisp texture, lime green color and a sweet/tart flavor. It ripens early mid-season

Urban Apple® is a NEW category of columnar trees that produce their fruit on spurs along the main stem. Each combines disease resistance, flavor and ease of growing in small spaces. Each has a narrow upright habit, ideally suited to grow in a container on a patio or as a small tree in the ground. Trees grow about 8'-10' tall. Like other apples, you need two different cultivars for pollination. Most Urban Apple® blooms midseason and are good pollinizers for the others.

They are each highly disease resistant selections from Dr. Jaroslav Tupy of the Czech Republic. Chill hours 800 to 1200. On MM106 semi-dwarf rootstock.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Which of the columnar apples are resistant to cedar rust? Thanks in advance.

Columnar apples are derived from McIntosh apples, which means they all have some resistance to cedar-apple rust. Resistance does not mean immunity however and your experience may vary from others.

  • I see the Tangy Green is resistant to apple scab and powdery mildew but is it also resistant to fire blight?

Columnar apples are not bred to be specifically resisitant to fireblight, nor has there been extensive testing done on them.

  • Would the Tangy Green be comparable in flavor like a Granny Smith?

Yes, it is a tart sub-acid McIntosh.

  • The reply to another question says that these trees aren't disease resistant but the description specifically says they are highly disease resistant selections. Which is correct, the tree description or the answer to the question?

Tangy Green Urban Apple is extremely resistant to diseases like apple scab and powdery mildew, but it is not resistant to Cedar-Apple Rust. I hope that helps clarify things.

  • In general, what is the approximate yield of a columnar apple tree?

    Approximately 1/8 bushel.

  • Will the Tangy Green Columnar apple be pollinated by either an Arkansas Black or a Liberty? Thanks. Oh, when do they ship?

By either yes and shipping for bareroot trees is spring of 2023, depending on your area.

  • is this tree, or any of your columnar apple trees resistant to Cedar Apple Scab?

Columnar apples are not bred for disease resistance. You want Liberty or Enterprise for that disease.

10 day review

Received in good condition; planted the same day. The trees are starting to bud out. Weather looks good for the next week, so expect to see leaves or flowers soon.
Thanks

I waited a year for this tree.

This was sold out, so I pre-ordered as soon as possible. My tree arrived on time and in great condition. I got it planted the next day and it seem to be doing well. It has buds, but I can't tell if they are good or not, I am hoping that all is well. I will keep an eye on it and hopefully the buds will leaf out and all will be well.
