alus domestica 'Tasty Red'

Tasty Red™ is a bright red, firm, sweet, juicy apple that ripens early mid-season.

Urban® apples are NEW columnar trees that produce their fruit on spurs along the main stem. Each combines disease resistance, flavor, and ease of growing in small spaces. Each has a narrow upright habit. Ideally suited to grow in a container, on a patio, or as a small tree in the ground, trees grow to about 8' tall. Like other apples, you will need two different cultivars for pollination.  Each Urban® apple variety blooms mid-season and is a good pollinizer for any other.

They are each highly disease resistant selections from Dr. Jaroslav Tupy of the Czech Republic. USDA Zones 4-9. Chill hours 800 to 1200. On MM106 semi-dwarf rootstock.

USDA Zone: 4-9

Mature Height: 8'-10' Columnar

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: Early Mid-Season

Pollination: Needs a Pollinizer

Semi-Dwarf Rootstock: MM106

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Do you deliver apple trees (interested in columnar apple trees) to california

    We do deliver to California

  • What is the best columnar apple for southern areas? Our chill hours are in the 700 range.

Most columnar apples require 800-1200 chill hours. You may need to consider a low-chill apple varietal like Early Pink Lady or Arkansas Black.

  • Would this be a good pollinizer for the tangy columnar?

Any apple in bloom groups 2-4 will be fine. For a list please check out our Apple Growing Guide.

  • It would be helpful for me to have some idea of the flavor of the apples, how well they keep and the texture of the flesh.

This is a red McIntosh apple and has all the qualities McIntosh is famous for - sweet subacid profile, clean crunchy texture, and good storage times.

Received a living tree

The tree is alive, about 2-3 feet tall, and is covered in leaves. Excited for the future, I don't see any apples on it. The tree awoke from dormancy this year and seems to be healthy.

Perfectly Pleased (so far)

I didn't know what to expect, not having ordered a tree to be shipped before. It arrived just when I was expecting it, in perfect condition, was packaged and bound expertly, AND online planting instructions were made available by video. I was so impressed, I immediately ordered another variety that will suit my needs and desires. My only disappointment is that I couldn't plant the two at the same time, ensuring the likelihood of maturation at the same time. (Not sure the second will blossom this year.) I'm very excited about the future of this little columnar treat!

Very pleased

Columnar apple trees arrived looking very sturdy! Very thick trunks, well- established roots , easily planted. Already budding & leafing out!

Their customer service is by far the most helpful and pleasant to work with. I ordered 2 column apple trees and the size and health were superior to other nurseries I’ve used.

Excellent specimen

I am writing this after I have potted the plant a few weeks ago. First of all, the plant arrived in excellent condition with roots fully developed. It was packaged securely so it wouldn't be damaged during shipping. It currently is growing leaves which I am so excited for. I am very happy with my purchase. Thank you.

Tasty Red Urban apple

The young, bare root tree arrived in excellent condition. I have planted it in a large container for the time being until we find the best location for it: our yard is undergoing some unexpected ground work at present. All is well, buds are expanding nicely. I can't wait to watch for flowers and then apples in the future!

The tree came with two others well packaged & in good condition. The planting instructions were very clear. I can wait to establish the roots!

Super excited

Tree came shipped well, carefully. In dormant state, I have had it planted in the ground for about 2 weeks now and it has started budding leaves already. I was nervous because of negative reviews online from this company. But I am happy with my purchase. Everything looked healthy and so far so good. Hoping it will produce lots of fruit in years to come!

New trees!

Trees arrived well packed and with roots moist. I put them in a water bucket till planting a day later. Still dormant, but it’s soon and stick early and chilly in the North Country. Eager to see some life.

protecting columnar apples

I sew up a long piece of black nylon netting from the fabric store into a long pillowcase shape and slip it over the columnar apples after pollination. Before doing this I thin the nickel-size fruit. It's tied to the trunk at the bottom with a bit of twine. No insect, raccoon, or bird damage ever! The netting lasts several years if brought inside after harvest, and the black is pretty inconspicuous.

Happy

I got 4 columnar apple trees from Raintree in Spring 2021. They all have grown a ton and look great! So cool.

Great Space Saver

I planted one of these in May of 2021. By September the tree has grown to five feet in a raised bed. Apples were to small to eat, but that was to be expected. I ordered a pollinator, another urban apple tree, from another source. The Raintree bare root had a much larger root system, which explains why it is now two feet taller than the other. Raintree did an excellent job with this
