Thundercloud Flowering Plum
Prunus cerasifera 'Thundercloud'
Thundercloud Plum is easily the most popular purple-leaved plum in America, and justly so. Originated in 1919 by Luther Burbank, it blooms with fragrant pale pink spring flowers, followed by bright red foliage, which turns darker as the season progresses. While ornamental, Thundercloud may set a crop of small edible plums which are dark red both inside and out.
It will grow to about 25' tall and wide. Can be prone to internal twiggy growth; best to keep it small with yearly summer pruning to control size, or let it be wild in an edge placement. While ornamental, it does best in full sun in a good garden soil.
