Prunus cerasifera 'Thundercloud'

Thundercloud Plum is easily the most popular purple-leaved plum in America, and justly so. Originated in 1919 by Luther Burbank, it blooms with fragrant pale pink spring flowers, followed by bright red foliage, which turns darker as the season progresses. While ornamental, Thundercloud may set a crop of small edible plums which are dark red both inside and out.

It will grow to about 25' tall and wide. Can be prone to internal twiggy growth; best to keep it small with yearly summer pruning to control size, or let it be wild in an edge placement. While ornamental, it does best in full sun in a good garden soil.

USDA Zone: 3-9

Grow Height:  25' (Standard)

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: N/A

Pollination: Early - with Asian plums

Size: (4'-5')

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Are these poisonous to small dogs

The fruit itself is safe for dogs to eat, but the pit may contain enough cyanide to make them sick, or cause an intestinal blockage. That said, this is an ornamental tree and does not produce much fruit (or any at all most years).

  • How do these do in the desert with 9a zone?

    Reasonably well with good irrigation.

LOve the trees , the fragrance

But the black Knot disease is attrociou. Both thunderclouds have it, it weakens the structure leaving porous wood which always eventually rots. This disease spreads systemically throughout the tree.

Still no life

I ordered my tree back in the early winter, and received it about a month ago. I received a bare root dormant plant with no leaves or sign of life. I planted it immediately, so excited to watch it come to life. It has been a month and still no life has come back to it. Not one leaf. I think it is time to contact the nursery.
