Gaultheria procumbens 'White Fiesta'

Unlike most Gaultheria cultivars, the berries of Winter Fiesta™ ripen while still white, turning pink as they mature. Berries can be made into tea, eaten raw, used to flavor simple syrup or make a refreshing ice cream. Leaves can be used for soothing teas. Both leaves and fruit taste like wintergreen lifesavers.

Self-fertile wintergreen ripens berries in waves, starting in late summer until late winter. They are a creeping native of the eastern United States and will spread outward 12 inches or more. Plant 12 inches apart, in partial or full shade. Needs a loose, acidic soil with high organic matter content. It grows to about 6 inches tall and makes a great edible evergreen groundcover. Hardy in USDA Zones 3-9.

Size: 1 Qt Pot

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Can the Winter Fiesta Wintergreen be grown in a pot?

Yes! A larger pot, but anywhere from 15 to 27 gallons will be plenty.

  • Do I need 2 of these trees to pollinate

No, wintergreen is self fertile and does not need cross pollination.

  • Of the several cultivars you sell, are they all equally fruitful. In my experience growing them in Pennsylvania and DC, as well as many years ago in California they are very shy bearers. Your photos of these cultivars temp. How many years till they bear?

They are all basically the same for amount of berries produced. In our greenhouses they bear as shown in the photo and are already of bearing age when shipped.
