Diospyrus kaki x virginiana 'Nikita's Gift'

As hardy as the American persimmon and as large as the Asian, Nikita’s large crops of 2-1/2 inch, flattish, red-orange fruit are certainly gifts. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Is this a grafted tree?

Yes, this is a grafted tree.

  • Is it astringent?

    Unless fully ripened yes.

  • I've been wanting a Nikita's Gift Persimmon Tree since 2016. Purchased twice from another supplier only to have both trees fail. With such a small tree (5-1/2 inch band pot) is it grafted? What sort of care should I give it? I've purchased own root roses this small, but never a fruit tree.

They are grafted on D. Lotus stock and can be cared for in pots if you are concerned about in-ground growing until they are larger.

  • Will Nikita's Gift pollinate other varieties such as CoffeeCake?

In theroy yes, but it is full self fertile.

Persimmon 'Nikita's Gift' in South-East PA, zone 7A.

I planted the tree in 2018. The tree was growing slowly first but became more and more vigorous in next years especially after generous feeding with a fertilizer. It was blooming every year since next season (2019), but fruits were dropping every summer bigger and bigger every year. This season (2024) few fruits remained on the tree, reached full size and started ripening. Fruits are ripening unevenly: some fruits already obtained orange color while other still are half green - half yellow. One fruit (on the top of the tree) has ripened completely (the end of September), much earlier than others, please see photos. Fruit size was 2.25 inch. The taste is amazing!, almost syrup-sweet with the Asian persimmon flavor. There were no traces of astringency. Another positive trait is relatively thin skin, somewhat thicker compared to commercially grown Asian persimmons, but not too much and does not interfere with pleasant eating experience.
Persimmon flowers were intensively visited by honeybees and bumblebees, therefore no wonder that a single seed is present. An indicator of another persimmon with male flowers in a neighborhood.

Arrived damaged but alive

It is alive but really small. So small that the top of the tree came broken off. Not sure if that will matter or not. I am hoping that it will be a normal tree shape with it arriving in that condition. But it is alive and starting to bud. If it does not cause an abnormal tree shape than I really do not care. I gave 4 stars because I got the cheaper ban pot and that I expected it to be small for the price but not broken. Saying that I would still buy from raintree again.
