Prunus cerasus x avium 'Danube'

Danube is a Hungarian sweet-tart, morello-style cherry hybrid, known in its homeland as Erdi Bötermö. A favorite in Hungary for its sweeter flavor, Danube is equally good for pie making and fresh eating, an uncommon feature in tart cherry varieties. Introduced to the United States through University of Michigan, this fruit produces deep, wine-red juice.

Danube is partially self fertile and reaches its full potential with pollinizer, which should be chosen with care since Danube is a very early bloomer - Sweetheart is a good choice.

It is self fertile and productive and ripens in early July. On Gisela 5 rootstock.

Gisela 5 is a dwarfing rootstock, 50% of standard size, that induces heavy early fruit production. Trees can be maintained at 10 to 12 feet tall. Gisela 5 is more forgiving of shallow soils and a better choice than the even more dwarfing Gisela 3 for people with enough room for this somewhat larger tree.

  • Can you grow these in pots for a couple years or do they have to go in the ground immediately?

    A couple years is probably fine in a large enough container.

  • How is danube cherry growing in Ga.? I'm in zone 8

    Good question! Sour cherries do much better in GA than sweet cherries, but there is a huge lack of trials for these tree in the GA area. Zone isn't nearly enough information to go by to determine how well a plant will grow, flower, fruit, and ripen. I'd give you 50/50 odds on it.

Beautiful Tree in Bloom

The tree arrived in excellent condition, beautiful buds and branches. After a time of spraying the tree and roots we decided to plant the tree within two hours. We sprayed it again every other day because of our sandy soil. Now ten days later the tree is in full bloom in the middle of my orchard. I am so happy to have this as a memorial tree foru husband, who loved cherries and cherry pie. I may order another one in the fall.
