Cydonia oblonga 'Smyrna'

This reliably productive, self-fertile tree was brought from Turkey over a century ago. Its large, yellow, pear-shaped fruit is great for cooking, with a delicious mild flavor that is favored for desserts, preserves and jellies. Requires an average of 300 chill hours between 32F-45F to reliably bloom and set fruit each year.

At the turn of the 20th century almost every rural family had a fruiting quince tree they relied on for medicine, pectin, and fragrant, long-lasting fruits. The varieties we offer have delightful pineapple-like flavors. They are prized for cooking, jelly making, and adding to apple cider. Quince trees are self fertile and showy, with big white blossoms in late spring and unusual, fuzzy yellow fruits in fall.

A tremendous success

I planted two bareroot specimens as street trees in front of my Seattle home two years ago. They have more than doubled in height and have some serious visual presence.

smyrna quince

The quince tree arrived with green limp leaves. I was expecting the tree to be a bit taller, it's 2 feet tall. I planted the quince on the same day it arrived, following all the instructions from Laura's video. It is well cared for and watered. Most leaves are still limp after a week.
Update after 3 weeks: The quince tree lost most of the leaves it came with, but has produced new branches and new leaves. It looks like it acclimated itself since the delivery. Raintree Nursery has great customer service!

Inspired

We got them in the ground right away, early enough in the spring and they appear to be thriving. We plan to espalier them, so perhaps we will send a picture when they are further along!

Your wee tree arrived and immediately was planted in our ground and it has new shoots so I believe it is growing and seems happy at its new home.

Rootbound

Rootbound, but otherwise healthy. Hope it rebounds.

Beautiful bare root tree

Wow Raintree!!!! By far the healthiest trees/plants I have ever bought that required shipping and I am literally on the other side of the country. I will not hesitate to be a lifelong customer. Also love Laura’s helpful and informative videos! My trees are already starting to bud.
