Prunus avium 'Bing'

The standard that sweet cherries are judged against - introduced in 1875 and still growing strong! The deliciously large, firm black cherry that eastern Washington is famous for.

It grows well in dry climates but the fruit may crack if rain comes during harvest time. Needs a pollinizer, which can be other sweet cherry varieties like Rainier, Sam, Van, (except Lambert, Royal Ann or Napoleon), and even the very late blooming Montmorency pie cherry. Requires 700-900 chill hours to reliably bloom and set fruit.

Mature Height: 8' (Mini-Dwarf), 12' (Dwarf)

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: July

Pollination: Needs a Pollinizer

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Can a sand cherry be a pollinator for the bing

No, it needs to be a Prunus avium for pollination

  • Will the Black Gold cherry and Bing cherry pollinate each other?

    Yes that will work fine.

  • Will a MT. FUJI FLOWERING CHERRY possibly pollinate a bing ?

They are different species and will not be suitable pollinating partners. You will want to select another sweet cherry varietal to pollinate the Bing.

  • How long does it take for Bing cherry trees to producer cherries?

It depends on the rootstock. On this Gisela series, which these trees are on, it should produce it's first fruits within 2-3 years of planting.

  • Can the mini-dwarf Bing be grown in a large container? If so, is there a cross pollinator that can also grow in a large container and do you ship cherries to California?

Yes it can do well in a wide container like a half wine barrel. Select another sweet cherry on a G3 stock for cross pollination.

  • Will the Evans cherry pollinate the bing cherry?

    Yes they will cross pollinate.

  • Will Stella cherry tree pollinate with Bing tree?

    Yes! They cross pollinate fine.

  • What size is the dwarf tree when mailed out and/or what size container does it come in?

This tree is 4-5" tall when shipping, in the spring, and it comes bareroot.

  • Where are you located?

Our nursery is located in Morton, a small town in Western WA

  • Will Bing sweet cherry tree cross polinate Royal Ann sweet cherry tree?

    No, they are incompatible.

  • Would the self-fertile Vandalay pollinate this Bing cherry?

    Yes that will work fine.

  • How much of the root stock is exposed? Would I be able to graft another variety on this tree?

The graft union will be roughly 3 inches above the soil after planting. In thoery you can graft onto the Bing itself as an interstem.

  • How tall is the tree when it arrives?

    Roughly 4'-5' tall.

  • Can Tehranivee be a pollinizer for the bing?

    Yes it can!

  • What are the chill hours for this variety?

    800+ hours

  • Will 2 Bings pollinate each other?

Not at all. You need another sweet cherry for cross pollination.

This is the second order I have made from Raintree nursery. Bare root is the way to go! All but one of the stems of my plants grew well immediately and I am very satisfied. Shipping packaging was amazingly secure! I am awaiting my next order for next week!

This Bing is one of 4 trees/plants I purchased from RN that seemed dead on arrival or, alternatively, unable to withstand the transport and transplant. It saddens me. I've ordered over a dozen trees/plants from RN and the majority are doing well and adjusting to their new home so I guess this poor Bing is a case of "it is what it is"
