Prunus avium 'Stella'

Stella is a black, firm, juicy, heart-shaped cherry from Canada. Because Stella is self-fertile, it makes an ideal selection for a backyard grower without space for two sweet cherry trees.

The tree is productive and the fruit is of excellent quality. Stella is moderately resistant to bacterial canker. Chill hours are hard to confirm - some resources say as low as  400 hours below 45F to successfully produce fruit, and others say 700-800.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • What variety of cherry can I grow successfully in north west Florida

Prunus avium, the sweet cherry, doesn't grow well in Florida due to the high humidity and regular heavy rains which invite disease and will destroy fruit crops.

  • Will Stella pollinate bing

    Yes they cross pollinate fine

  • Will Stella pollinate Rainier?

    Yes they are compatible.

  • Can you ship to Washington state

Yes these can be shipped to WA state.

  • Can I plant dwarf rootstock in a big pot?

For a time yes, but not for it's whole life if you plan to harvest cherries for many years. A mini-dwarf can survive in a large container much longer.

  • What color are the blooms?

    White!

  • Are your Stella cherry trees, mature and fruiting trees?

Our trees are 3 years old when shipped, near to blooming and fruiting age, especially on the Gisela series of rootstocks.

Three cherry trees

I ordered three bare root cherry trees, two Stella and one bing. They came about 3 weeks apart. Mid April to early May in Cumming Georgia. All three trees had super healthy buds for leaves showing a little green at the tip of each bud. I planted them within 24 hours of coming. We used the native Georgia mostly clay soil. Crumbled fine by hand. Within two weeks each tree had healthy leaves. I was super pleased with the product. The pictures are of the three trees as of today. One with the most leaves is about 2 weeks ahead of the next one. And the one with buds was planted two days ago.

Will definitely buy more trees from you!!

We ordered several different types of trees this year from various nurseries. The cherry tree from your Nursery was by far the healthiest and most beautiful tree we got. We planted it and it is doing beautifully! Thank you so much for all your hard work to create such beautiful trees!

Ive been buying from raintree since the mid to

Ive been buying from raintree since the mid to late 80s and Ive bought 30 or so trees. I bought a stella- bing cherry trees are prevalent around the seattle suburbs but they mould and have other problems. The stella did not do that and the taste of the fruit was similar. My stella after 4 or 5 years got to be 10 feet tall and it had so many cherries on it- not pruning it- that it bent the tree i9n half and killed it! Now I prune more aggressing and thin many of the trees. Peaches need thinned so much! You get way bigger5 and more flavourful fruit by pruning 30 to 50%

Disappointed

I ordered 3 trees and 50 strawberries!
The trees arrived …. Without the strawberries!
I received a credit after complaining about it!
Out of the 3 trees I received, one met the criteria of a healthy young tree, the other 2 however, I would call dried out sticks! The diameter of the Cherry tree for example , is just about 1/4 inch! Not a single side branch, like on the only healthy plum tree I received! The price I paid does not match the „ quality „ I received ..,, or better said, not received!
I was told I don’t give the „tree“ a chance…. It has nothing to with that, I expect a more developed tree for $70 each! A stick is not a tree…. And a tree is what I paid for!

Beautiful specimen

The tree I received is strong and healthy and doing great with many vibrant buds and unfolding leaves. The tree arrived in great condition, with a solid stem and many healthy roots. I wish I had known about the quality of your stock before as I've been disappointed by plants I've received from other companies.

Stella Stick

Little Stella arrived in great condition; very well packaged. I planted it the day after arrival. This tree is much younger than the Tristar Peach Plum that I'd purchased from you, as it has buds but no branches. I've been checking on it daily and haven't noticed any significant change in the buds, even with the warmer weather and sun, so I'm hoping that it will perk up in the coming weeks.

Cherry Tree Review

The Stella cherry tree arrived packaged securely. The tree has buds coming out of a majority of the trunk!
