You will receive 3 of the following 4 varieties: (Liberty/Williams Pride/Enterprise and/or Spartan)

Please Note: We cannot guarantee specific variety requests for combo trees due to the numerous factors that can affect successful grafting. If you desire a specific varietal, we recommend purchasing it as a single-graft tree from our collection.

"Espalier" refers to special practices for training trees onto trellises. There are many ways to make your trees into works of art, and the trees we offer have already been trained along the same plane in a 3-tier, T-shape, horizontal cordon. As you continue the training, you can shape trees into any of the designs seen in the drawings. Beautiful when grown against a wall, a building or on an existing fence or wires. Trees should be spaced an average of 8-10' apart. Branches are at about 1-1/2, 2-1/2 and 3-1/2 feet. Each tier will be labeled.

Semi-Dwarf Espalier Rootstock: MM106

Size: (3'-5') Bareroot

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Is the tree self pollinated?

The variaties on this tree pollinize with each other, but are not self fertile alone.

  • What zone is the three-tier espalier? I live in Zone 6A, zip code 83864, however a very turbulent jet stream causes a lot of disruption & it unusual to get early snowstorms, mid winter thaws followed by freezes, warmer weather, thawing and more freezing. Local gardeners prefer to plant trees and shrubs better suited for zone 4; zone 5 is pushing it, especially with plants that require a lot of time investment to maturity or expense.

All of these apple variaties are hardy to USDA Zone 4.

  • I live in Dallas, Texas. Can I grow this tree in a container? Should I use native soil from my garden + compost + expanded shale to the pot?

Given irrigation and afternoon shade, you could grow this for some years in a large container. Native soils and compost are a good mix, but as pots are drier faster than in-ground planting the use of organic matter or other water holding amendments, to keep the pot wetter for longer, is the way to go.

  • How tall can these trees grow? Can they be maintained to stay at 6-7 feet, or do you have to keep adding higher tiers as they age?

They can, in theroy, be grown in excess of 12 feet, but can be maintained as low as 6 feet with training and pruning.

  • I have 2 questions. Is this item 3 individual trees of different varieties so that they cross pollinate? Or, do I have to order 3 of this item (totaling $330) so the trees cross pollinate? Does your team select the different varieties, or can I request?

This tree, as with all of our multi-grafted combo trees, is a single tree with several variaties grafted onto a single stem. They (the branches) all cross pollinate each other. You can make a request on your order, but availability is not guarnteed.
